Having Lived near both cities and now in Lubbock my impressions are as far as Lubbock a lot to see and do .some road const. lots of wind.Marsha Sharp freeway once is completed will help people get across the city fast.I like the eating places Lubbock has.And Amarillo what comes to mind is the interstate 40 and I-27 The Big texan restrurant,Palo Duro Canyon south east of their. Both are flat areas and are I think easy to get around in.As far as weather temps can be colder this time of year in the Panhandle (amarillo area) as opposed to the south plains(Lubbock area) but Lubbock is south of Amarillo and so they may see snow while Lubbock will just feel cold.

I lived in Amarillo for 13 years before moving to the crappy PacNW, where I currently reside. I have friends in Lubbock and was just visiting last year. I am trying to make it back to the area, if that gives you any indication as to how much I like it there.

What are your impressions? Im just curious.

I really like the area, and the area is starting to grow on my girlfriend, she's been to Atlanta,Birmingham,Phoenix,Denver,El Paso,Vegas and Florida all fairly recently but she seems to like the Texas panhandle the best.

I know most people dont like flat land but to me its very nice, I love the plains and wide open spaces, that what I was raised on.
Desert Sun,

I have never been to Lubbock but haven't heard a lot of poistives, that doesn't mean anything really. As for Amarillo, we have only stayed overnight on several occassions when going from here to the west or when we used to make the trip from ABQ to Dallas several times a year. I love the city..If we were to ever moved back to Texas it would be first on my list. Yes, the weather sucks and if beauty is what you want, there are a million places better, but it is just a nice place.

Amarrilo is windy and cold in the winter with a good amount of snow. I don't know about Lubbock, but would guess it is about the same.

The summers are almost identical, dry with highs in the low 90s on average. Amarillo is windier and has colder winters (*cough* and almost always smells of cow manure *cough*), with highs in the 40s and lows in the 20s. Lubbock has highs in the 50s and lows in the 20s in the winter.

Default Location, Amenities, Texas Spirit

I've previously had friends in both cities, and they liked the respective cities they lived in. I've been to both cities and liked them both, but I like Lubbock better. Amarillo may have transcontinental I-40, but it doesn't have a loop freeway. Lubbock does (Loop 289, 30 miles long). With things like our ever-changing weather, Lubbock has more of an advantage. Amarillo has snowier winters; Lubbock, by contrast, not as much. Lubbock's temperature extremes each day span 30 to 40 degrees on a consistent basis. Both cities have felt the pinch in the economy with the rest of the state, but are resilient and will get better as things in Texas get better. In Lubbock, you'll get 270 to 300 days of sunshine per year and you are never far away from anything with amenities. When it comes to location, Lubbock actually has it better than Amarillo despite a gross lack of freeway artery connections to and from many locations, as the Hub City is halfway between Dallas and Albuquerque, and almost halfway between Amarillo and Midland. You'll also like Lubbock's rock-and-roll heritage, and breathtaking escarpments off of the Caprock to the east and southeast. It's a friendly place and they speak Texan as well as anybody.

I'll admit, if you get job offers in both Amarillo and Lubbock, choose Lubbock.

In both cities, the less desirable parts of town are on the eastern side. In Lubbock, I would avoid anything east of Avenue Q and the Arnett-Benson and Jackson-Mahon neighborhoods. I'm not as familiar with Amarillo, but I believe you want to avoid many northern parts as well.

The northern parts of Amarillo are older and more run down. The newer parts of town are south and south west.

Amarillo does get a fair amount of snow. There is a constant wind in Amarillo, that (on bad days) goes through the feed lots first and there is a cow poop smell.

I lived there (Amarillo) for almost 6 years- we just moved July of last year. Feel free to DM with questions. I didn't spend a whole lot of time in Lubbock, so can't provide much help there.

Case did a good job....I agree with his description. We lived 6 years in Lubbock, 5 years in Amarillo. I much prefer Lubbock....the weather is not quite as harsh in the winter and there is much more to do there for families and entertainment - Texas Tech provides lots of activities that are available to the public. The school system is better IMO (Amarillo has two separate districts, one is very good and the other is not). Both have got good medical districts. Lubbock is generally a much safer environment to be out and about in both day and night, and the people are for the most part more refined in Lubbock than Amarillo.
