I'm from Hamilton Ontario originally and a lot of places are very conservative, the bible belt you know, guns guns guns and of course no legal cuban cigars. Plus the health care in Canada isn't free, it comes out of our taxes.

Bible belt and conservative – does that mean there are no loose women in southern Texas? Will I be considered a deviate if I don’t go to church?

Guns scare most Canadians but I'd like to have a couple of those around. What does Texas law say about Canadians having hand guns in Texas?

I guess I'll have to switch from Cuban to Nicaraguan or Dominican cigars. The Panamanian cigars aren't worth my money.

A small Harley is certainly a good ride for me. Pickup trucks, like a nice F150 or Silverado sounds good too. Can lock a shotgun into cab? The dog would love being in the box.

In Texas the vehicle is considered an extension of the home so a firearm is legal to carry in it. Its called the Castle Doctrine.

Plenty of worthy cigars here.

LOL, cigar7. I didn't think you could move to Texas unless you had a gun, a big bike, and a pickup truck! That is what our son has convinced us as the draw for him!

He is happy as a prairie dog biking with the guys on the weekends into NM and Arizona and trying to keep his pickup from being carjacked again!

We do love the area and can't wait to get back for our next visit.

Default Lake Ontario substitute: Rayburn and Toledo Bend.

If you want a big water view and some room for your dog(s) I would not recommend the Gulf Coast because you really have to have some money in order to swing it. I think BobTex has the right idea. Lake Ontario is a really big freshwater lake so why not head for its equivalent in East Texas or Northwest Louisiana. Sam Rayburn would place you very close to Lufkin that has amenities and smaller urban diversions. Toledo Bend involves a bit of a longer trek to urban centers. You can get very reasonably priced waterfront with some room for the dog on either lake. And you are far enough inland to escape the worst of the hurricanes. Once again, you have to be a millionaire to have waterfront on the Gulf these days. Go inland to the big freshwater lakes of Rayburn and T-Bend.

p.s. I have lived in Duluth and used to go to Mackinaw Island. Also Winnipeg. You can read my reviews on Muskoka boat houses on Amazon.com.
I love Canada--for the most part. I am conservative and do attend church but the folks on Rayburn and T-Bend really mind their own business and have a cowboy-Cajun independent streak. I don't think you would be ill-at-ease. Guns, hunting, trucks are ingrained in the culture. But even bohemian artist types can co-exist as long as they mind their own business and let other mind theirs. Sort of a Libertarian outlook.

Kurt.
