Happy Thanksgiving, fellow Texans!

Hope y'all are having a good one! Anybody eating FRIED turkey?

Just for the heck of it, I decided to post a quick poll. That is, what do you prefer/make for the Thanksgiving pie? Sweet 'tater or pumpkin?

I know that pumpkin is the one most associated with the holiday, but that the former seems to have a bit more association with our particular part of the country...

Well, y'all have a good one, and keep the alka-selzer and Pepto-Bismol handy!

Neither. Pecan pie (short "e" in Pecan"). That's the pie that I've always heard associated with Thanksgiving in Texas (East, North, Central Texas predominantly - don't know what the rest of regions of the state prefers).

My preference is real chocolate (Dutch process cocoa!!) pie topped with real whipped cream and chocolate shavings.

Pecan is next.

Pumpkin is fine, but I wouldn't care if I never had another slice.

I've never had sweet potato pie, so I don't know what that is like!

BTW.....I was reading a small cookbook on cast iron cooking (Lodge, of course....)...and I had to laugh at this:

"For Southern purists, the sugar bowl does not come near the batter."
The purists are supposed to prefer white cornbread with no sugar......the southwest is supposed to like yellow cornbread with little or no sugar...and every other place is supposed to like yellow cornbread with sugar!

LOL!! Since I grew up on yellow cornbread with some sugar in the batter, I guess we just ain't Southern..... :-)

Neither. I'm not a big fan of pie; unless it's pecan pie with ice cream. I'd prefer a red velvet or a 7 up cake.

Welllll, you got a good point there, THL...but I was thinking more in terms of direct comparisons and "deep orange" pies! LOL

As it is, I agree that pecan pie is most associated with Texas all the way around (holiday or not).

As to pronunciation? Hmmmm. I would fine tune by saying it is "puh-Kahn"...slight accent on second syllable.

I say it the exact same way lol

I hate when my roommate (a yankee!) corrects me when I say it like that

LOL How does your roommate say it? Pee-can? I used to date a woman from Up East and pure yankee...and she pronounced it that way. I always told her a "Pee-can" was something we hunting and fishermen in Texas used for beer-induced emergencies. Has NO place in a pie....

I voted neither. I love sweet potatoes and I like baked treats like pumpkin bread, but I don't care for either of those pies. Never have. I much prefer pecan or chocolate when it comes to pies!
