Default Amarillo neighborhoods anyone?

We've been looking at a few places and while there's another I think I'd like a smudge more I found out that only Amarillo has programs for my dd that would help our family tremendously. So now on to the finer details..

We need to live in or very near the city limits. Could use ideas for family neighborhoods (older kids in our house, a lot of young families wouldn't be as good). We prefer older, established area within walking of some stores if its possible, near bus? bike-able? Of course we're willing to compromise if necessary. In general are there areas to avoid? If I recall you don't want to be downwind from Tyson..

We're going for a short visit in a week or so - maybe see if I can set up an interview or two. Have to see if we can get out of our lease and then depending on when a job comes through - I'd move tomorrow if I could..
DD is special ed and its always a stressful juggle for us with school breaks, after school care..esp summers. It will be a huge relief to have that set up - job first though..

Fun ideas for our visit welcome..

The first post here is pretty old now but it looks like no one had much info. I've lived in Amarillo most of my life. In general the farther South West you go the nicer the neighborhoods get. Those areas are also more expensive of course. If you want to be on the edge of town you might look at some of the new additions near the hospitals. Thats on the North-ish West side. Also they are building new homes along South Georgia and South Western that are fairly reasonable and are fairly close the the south edge of the city. Good luck!
