Maybe if you're college age or a burn out party boy like Van Wilder, yeah its a cool city. Good luck finding a job there unless you're in the political arena or in the IT field, even then its hard to land your foot in the door, especially in these trying times. Dallas & Houston by far have the best & most diverse economies in Texas hands down.

The Lakewood/Greenville Avenue/Knox Henderson areas of Dallas have high walkability. So do many othe parts of Dallas but you will be best off ifyou have a car. Dallas is building the largest light rail projects in the nation and has a trolley and commuter line to Ft Worth. Also streetcars are in the work in the next five years. And DART also has an great bus system in addition to the rail lines.

To the OP . . . be forewarned, the most "walkable" parts of Austin (Travis Heights, North Loop, Hyde Park, Bouldin Creek) are also the most expensive. That is of course, unless you are not averse to living with roommates. Most people are often unwillingly forced to live on the periphery and away from where the action is. And believe what you've been told about public transit in Austin, it is abysmal.
