I just found out yesterday that we are being transferred to Bonham, Texas from El Paso. Would appreciate any info regarding Bonham and/or surrounding areas. Thank you in advance.

Bonham is a small town (9,000 people) within about a 45 minute drive from Northern suburbs of Dallas--ie any decent shopping, restaurants, etc. It's a very quiet town where everything closes by 8pm, everyone knows who you are, and your kids won't be able to get away with anything without you knowing about it!! It's not a bad town, but I don't think the schools are very good. Close by is the even smaller town of Honey Grove (where I grew up) with a pop. of about 2,000. I think the schools there are much better (having been in them, then graduated from there and gone on the excel at a difficult school).
There are lots of other small towns to live in around Bonham, as it is a rural town itself. But you will be safe there, and the cost of living is very low. |

I agree with almost everything that tchrmom said except for the part about the Honey Grove school system. I also grew up and graduated from school there and it was a great school back then. Today however, it isn't that great. You can just check their low TAKS results and see for yourself. They have been the second lowest in the county for a few years now. The greatest schools in Fannin County would be Sam Rayburn, Ector, and Dodd City. They have excellent TEA ratings.

I toured Bonham last year, thinking about re-locating. Nice looking downtown. Housing was inexpensive. The people just seemed too hillbillyish for me. Here's what I heard at a convenience store "Caleb, put that down or mamas gonna whup yor butt" Then the mom came, wearing what looked to be a bathrobe and started yelling at the kids.
I'm sure there are many intelligent folks in Bonham, but that one incident steered me away. |

I would avoid the school system and choose the smaller schools in the outlying areas, but Bonham is placed in a great location to reach Dallas, Mckinney and other larger towns, while living in an area that has a cheaper cost of living
