PORT ARTHUR — In what could be one of the largest spills in a regional waterway in some time, about 420,000 gallons of crude oil has spilled after three vessels collided in the Port Arthur area Saturday morning, the U.S. Coast Guard said.

Looks like the spill is now fully contained.

If any place has the equipment to clean it up quickly and efficiently, it would be there.

I keep hearing conflicting reports of 40K and 400K being spilled. Wonder which it is? Anyone know what the capicity is of an average size hold on a tanker?

Here's a photo of the collision:

A local paper said about 11,000 barrels, or about 420,000 gallons of oil. Since the collision was in the ship channel is wasn't that difficult for them to contain the spill.

If memory serves correctly from my days loading these things...a barge fully loaded to draft can hold upwards of 12,000 BBLS and a ship can hold a few million BBLS depending on how many of the tanks are loaded with said product.
