Today if you're black but of means in a white area of town especially an older neighborhood you'll be met with silent racism perhaps some stonewalling or dirty looks.

In youth areas if you 'fit in' with the white kids you'll be treated well but probably draw more unwelcome attention from police and authorities if you're a black male or particularly if you're a large black male.

Any 'differences' between you and a stereotypical white person of your age in Austin will be perceived as you being hostile. Its not like NYC where you can wear typical urban African-American youth gear and its normal and no one bats an eye. You will be targeted, and harassed, made to feel unwelcome in stores by staff/customers and basically shunned.

So its an incredible joke to say that Austin is just swell and welcoming to blacks. What a joke this is the town that spent big bucks to segregate them 80 years ago. The apples dont fall far from the tree despite what anyone from here wants to tell you.
Funny you are a bit of a hypocrit....

Ever walk through Atlanta Georgia, Fayetteville North Carolina, or spent time on the Hawaiian Islands?

It is an incrdible joke to believe that being a racist isnt an equal opportunity that all races participate in...

Just my 2 cents

You have to understand that when that article or page was written we were still in the midst of black and white segregation in the southern US. It was still common practice to have separate schools, restaurants, hotels, bathrooms, drinking fountains etc. so naturally they would want to segregate the neighborhoods to make the rest of their segregation easier. That is the sense I got from reading it.. And again it was 1930, not much better than 1865. It wasn't till the civil rights acts of 1964 that all of that ended..

By 1968 all forms of segregation had been declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court and by 1970, support for formal legal segregation had dissolved. Formal racial discrimination was illegal in school systems, businesses, the American military, other civil services and the government. Separate bathrooms, water fountains and schools all disappeared and the civil rights movement had the public's support.[

Default Prejudice?

What?

Are people claiming others to be prejudiced? Shame on you all.

Hypocrites! All of ya.

all humans are prejudice. And if you want to pretend you are not, go ahead.
I will bet there are thousands of scientific studies, and Scientists who will be more than happy to offer proof, to what I have always known without their wasted money, to be true.

Humans believe they are among everything. Of course they don't want to admit it. "Now", it is something to be looked 'down' upon, so, 'everyone' plays the 'game', 'that' way. "The Game", is always, going to be 'played', how the 'players' are 'forced' to play it. Otherwise, they will be 'kicked' off the 'team' of 'society', and labeled, some unpleasant, 'tag'. And loose a foot hold in social status. Which could mean, losing their livelihood. (job, house, spouse, offspring, etc..) So, everyone 'must' play or suffer the consequences. People who live in Vidor, must behave as 'Vidorians' otherwise, they risk their lives, and in this case, literally. Vidor is not known for having a lot of 'wealth'. Most of the population, is really struggling to keep what they have. They are unable to simply pick up and move away, start a new life, in a better, different kind of 'prejudiced', society.

If, the 'game' were to change tomorrow, and the way it is going, it very well could, and suddenly, for whatever reason, let's say, The Pope, or Catholics were somehow looked down upon, for something, for something, the tide would be set, and the game would change to being set up against them for a while. But, that doesn't mean the other's are off the hook. They are still going to have something judged about them too, forever and ever. It is always going to be there.

You 'snotty' Apes, living wherever it is, In whatever "triangle", it is, you live in, or 'Circle', you may live. You can hug all the diseased, starving, homeless children you want, in front of the media. You can even tell yourselves, how open and free of any 'isms' you may be. You are silly.

What about other animals? Huh? How much equal are they to you?
see? you are not that non judgmental are you?

I didn't think so. Stop being hypocrites and just be honest. Crap.
Bunch of idiots.

Go beyond prejudice, if you dare. www.earthlings.com

You're making it sound like all Southern cities participated equally. I would be willing to wager that very few large Southern cities spent large amounts of cash to basically boot blacks out of all parts out of the city except for a 'negro' zone. States like Georgia were fairly enlightened compared to other Southern states after the civil war which would explain why Atlanta is such a good city for African Americans today.

The sanitized city plan on file regarding segregation for Austin is disgusting enough imagine what the reality on the ground was like. How did they ensure such total cooperation in the city with the segregation plan despite many blacks not wanting to uproot and move to the East side? I'm sure blacks who didnt want to move were threatened by authorities, probably beaten up, possibly had their homes burnt down or worse.

This is Austin's legacy in regards to race and its not good and despite what it tells itself its view of blacks hasnt changed all that much.
Also despite what you say a lot of Southern cities didnt behave as poorly or as racist towards blacks, Atlanta being an excellent example of this.

Well shall I remind you of Birmingham and a lady named Rosa Parks. That was one high profile example. How about the ones you didn't hear about? Mind you, I was only a kid during the incidents in Birmingham and knew nothing about them at the time. The whole civil rights movement of the mid to late sixties (are you forgetting about that?) The murders (lynchings) , burning and bombing of churches etc. Southern cities did not behave as poorly? are you kidding? And remember that was the 60's.. The article you speak of was in the 30's, much earlier when there were no "civil rights" for any minorities not only blacks but Mexicans and I'm sure a few others as well.

I am just shaking my head to think that people can have such disdain for another culture or race....Sickens my stomach man.

They have a very hot place in hell for people like that....That's how I feel. I'm not a saint, but if I am thinking of the right incident....Individuals like that will meet their match with their Maker....Won't be a pretty site. Like I said there is a specifically very HOT location in Hell for people like that.
Yes, Jasper is where that happened. I believe two of those guys actually got the death penalty for that. Yeah they tied him to the back of a truck and drove fast through an secluded area, thus causing his body to tear apart. I'd say Jasper and Vidor are the two places that you should Avoid the most. I've passed through Vidor, but I have NEVER driven into the city.

i currently live in east texas, and you have your black schools and white schools. not saying some schools are pretty well mixed, because they are out there, and even the ones that have a clear majority will have some members of other races who generally do pretty well, but people still talk, especially when the conversation has sports involved, about a certain school being "black" or "white". there is a new group coming in, though, with the increasing population of hispanics, and some people are very, very against them. i think the racism is taking a turn for the worse here, like in many parts of the US, and people are very vocal about their distrust of hispanics and say things you would never hear them say about any other race.

I can vouch for this poster. I grew up in Beaumont and attended a middle school that was 85% black. I heard my friends there time and time again say "My momma says you don't ever stop in Vidor. If you get a flat you get out of your car and run."
You can check the wikipedia article on Vidor. It used to be what is called a "sundown town" In fact, I heard that up until the early 80s there was still a sign on IH-10 as you entered Vidor that read "Nxxxxx, don't let the sun go down on you in Vidor."
Additionally, people in the area are very aware of the "white flight" from Beaumont to Lumberton.

I cannot believe you would trash talk Groves like that! I LIVE THERE! yes. we joined up with Port Neches to become the PN-G Indians and have the title and nickname the Twin Cities.
There is NO KKK anywhere in these two towns and racistism is almost if not completely gone. We DO have blacks on the field. TRAITOR! YOU CAME FROM THIS AREA AND YOU TALK ABOUT IT LIKE THAT!? WHO THE HELL DO YOU THINK YOU ARE?!

*THERE IS NO RACISM. WE DO NOT HAVE A BAD RAP. I AM REPORTING YOU AND I HOPE YOU BURN IN HELL!*

rise above it?! so you think you're better than everyone else?????? oh fudge you!!!
the blacks mostly live in Port Arthur and that area but some do live in Groves/Port Neches. Why, our superintendent of our school district is NOT white. She's Hispanic/Caucasin.
