San Angelo isn't very horse-friendly. Soil is too rocky for horses' feet and decent hay is very difficult to come by and expensive when you can find it. Also there are few public places to ride out there. (I had my horse there in 1993, so things may have changed.) Also, LOTS of tornadoes and violent storms in San Angelo!!! We left after the BIG Mother's Day storm in 1997!

Honestly, anywhere I can think of that fits your criteria has tornadoes...

Yes, San Angelo is still nice. Did go over recently toward Pecos, Van Horn area, etc. Scary!! Saw the large Border Patrol and Detention building, and left quickly. Also dusty, dirty, am sure you can get the picture....

Scary? Hmmmm. It would never occur to me to be afraid of a Border Patrol area or checkpoints....I go through two of them when I go to Alamogordo, NM.....one of them is outside Sierra Blanca.

It's really no big deal unless you're an illegal alien, running drugs or have something to hide.

I am curious lilypad, are your hispanic? I ask cuz hispanics seem to be scared of Border Patrol even if they are American citizens. This is based from my own experiences when traveling with hispanic friends.

West Texas has alot of small towns like you are describing, but you know the saying about the weather in Texas, "if you don't like the weather stick around it will change in a few minutes." That is no matter where you are, even in Marfa. There was a Tornado in Saragosa not far from Ft. Davis in the 80's and it wiped out the whole town. There is no Walmart in Alpine/Ft.Davis/Marfa. The nearest one is going to be in Ft. Stockton. I here they are going to build a Super Wal-Mart there.

A few names that come to mind are Andrews, Brownfield, and Lamesa. All are located between Midland/Odessa and Lubbock. All have cheap land, conservative values, and are relatively isolated.

Andrews CVB - Andrews Chamber of Commerce
City - City of Andrews, Texas

Medical - Permian Regional Medical Center

------------------------------------------------------------
Brownfield CVB - Brownfield Chamber of Commerce
City - City of Brownfield - Star of the South Plains

Medical - Brownfield Regional Medical Center
------------------------------------------------------------
Lamesa City - Lamesa TX - Official Website

Medical - Medical Arts Hospital

They are definitely worth checking out. One thing though: You will not find a Wal-Mart in Andrews. In fact you will find few "large chain" businesses. Most of the businesses are locally owned or smaller chains. They are all very nice though.

The Saragosa tornado was a really freak weather event...the probability of a tornado in that area is extremely low, but it can happen once every 1000 years. Look at a climatological map of tornado frequency and you'll see what I mean. The town wasn't entirely wiped out; it's still chugging along.

I'd much rather shop at a locally owned store, even if the prices are somewhat higher.

Default in TX?

May I suggest New Mexico? I dont know how you'd feel about that state and I understand if you dont have any positive vibes about it, there isnt much in NM that is positive but it does meet the criteria you stated in your post and if you are looking for a retirement place it is a great place. The prices are pretty reasonable too!! Maybe some ranch between Albuquerque and Santa Fe or maybe a little bit to the west of Albuquerque?
