Meet the Flintstones | The Texas Tribune

Yes, polls can get widely varied results from simple word changes. Yes, statistics can be misleading. We all know this.

However, there's a serious f***ing problem when the majority of your state does not believe human evolved from other species, and almost 1/3 believes humans coexisted with dinosaurs! The wording in these questions was pretty damned straightforward. This is not a case of pollsters getting tricky to prove a point.

Embarrassing! What does this ignorance stem from? Sometimes it seems like people are proud of being ignorant in Texas.

You should have made this thread with a poll asking the same questions. It would have been interesting to see if C-D had results that were similar. But seriously, 1/3? Reminds me of that old Bill Hicks bit

I think it's an American problem rather than just scientific ignorance in Texas. I've seen similar stats for the USA.

TXNGL: Maybe in the South, but I seriously doubt you'd get poll results like that in, say, Oregon, Maine, Pennsylvania, etc. I think compared to the South, Texas might actually be slightly better!

Can you link to some other studies that you've seen? I'd be interested to compare.

Can't link any as they've just been news articles I've read over the last few years. I was shocked, to say the least, that it was so rampant. Honestly, are they having these debates in other countries that are turning out all these cutting edge scientists? Somehow I doubt it!

has anyone ever seen that episode of Futurama where that robot says "I choose to believe what I was programmed to believe"? haha this reminds me of that.

Technically, what is a "dinosaur"? There are several species that are still alive today that classify as prehistoric. Sharks are one. Others include various lizards and those in the crocodillian family.

As for evolution, I myself believe that it's more likely that we did evolve, however, the jury is still out. The science is interesting, lots of noise, not much signal right now. More and more prominent scientists are doing a 180 on some of their original thoughts.

people--the only thing we need to remember is that voters chose George Bush (light) over Ann Richards...that pretty much sums up the mentality of most people in Texas...
and they will probably choose Rick Perry (AGAIN) over Kay Hutchinson...
and the fact that Debra Medina is doing so well in polls and letters to editors just speaks about the ignorance of the masses...

Texas Nick, my daughter, at the age of 6, would lecture me about the differences between prehistoric crocodiles and dinosaurs. LOL. They aren't the same and crocodiles have also changed over time.
It's the "young Earthers" who believe that man existed at the same time as the dinosaur as they believe the Earth is only about 10,000 years old, so it's not a technicality.

"young earthers" are probably the only ones these people polled. I agree with an above post....If you polled here I bet you'd get different results. Majority of the State huh? How many of you here participated in that poll? Not me. As in all polls, I'd guess this one is skewed to look like all the people in Texas believe all that, when in truth, they don't.
