Which area of Amarillo or outside of Amarillo would be a good/safe area in a good school district for a single mom with one child, a couple dogs and cats who needs a rental house. I'll be moving from out of state, so would like some areas to check out before I come out for a lookie see.
I gotta get out of AZ! Thanks!! |

depends on what you're willing to pay and where you plan to work. Nice apartments on the NW side of town, where its really growing. That wouldn't make sense though, if you're going to work east of town, for instance.
You should be able to find a decent house in the area south of I-40 to around 45th or so, between Western Street and Coulter Street . That's a big area, but you'll find apartments and houses both and there are several elementary schools in the area. I would avoid the NE side. SE is probably all right, but I'd try to stay west of Western Street, more toward the west side of town. check the listings at Amarillo.com (the newspaper) and I'd also look for a realtor that manages rental properties. |

Canyon is also nice. It has more of a college feel though. Good schools. What part of AZ are you moving from? If you are moving from a big city area and are used to heavy traffic, then I think even if you live on the west side of Amarillo and work on the east side, the traffic will be a breeze. People who live in a larger city are used to longer traffic commutes. It only takes about 10 minutes to get from one side of Amarillo to the other.
I agree with scoobagirl in the areas you should look at and the ones you should avoid. Good luck with your search. |

Thanks for the replies. I'm thinking of putting the dogs in a kennel for a few days and heading to Amarillo next week.
Topropeprincess - Currently I live outside Prescott, AZ, traffic on the highway between Prescott & Prescott Valley can get bad. Plus, I had lived in PHX for about a year and half so I know terrible traffic! Canyon is one of the areas I plan to check out and I don't think it would be such a bad commute to Amarillo for work. I noticed that you are from Murphreesboro, TN, I'm from Chattanooga, TN before I moved west! |

Canyon is great. Bushland is growing too, if you're looking for a smaller area. The city of Amarillo covers a lot of territory - pretty spread out. Good luck!
