Question Teacher looking for a job OTHER than teaching in Texas

I am looking into moving to Texas (Austin, Dallas, or Houston) from Michigan and was planning on getting an elementary teaching position but due to the economy I am concerned I will not be able to get a teaching job. Does anybody have any ideas of other careers I can look into in Texas that have a much better outlook than teaching??

(I have my master's degree in counseling too)

Might try a corporate trainer, but a lot of those are IT related and will require an IT background. But maybe you can get one in the HR realm.

Ever consider corrections? The prison employment field, federal and state, is always hiring, and you never have to worry about layoffs. A degree in counseling will go far if you were selected for a federal position.

Starting pay federally would be in the $35-45,000.00 a year range.

female prison guard--NOT what I would want my daughter to do if she left teaching..

if you have elementary background you can either work in day care center and hope to get a business degree via internet and move up to school director--because anyone who teaches in a daycare is getting paid worse than teachers usually...
and private schools are in same boat--pay is less and benefits probably not as good--but there are some well regarded private schools in DFW area--

there are some daycares that have KINDERGARTEN classes--and those-- because it is school age class--have to follow the regulations of TEA--the teachers have to be certified teachers--and they are not teaching during the summer session because public school does not operate then either...

I guess it partly depends on what your specialization was for your elementary degree--

you might try to get something in social work that involves working with children--
or running a city's program for children's classes like gymnastics, art--but lots of those could suffer from cities shrinking budgets...

you could check into becoming a nanny--there are many working families in this area who want nannies--unfortunately they want an educated person's skills without wanting to pay more than 12 an hour for them from lots of stuff I see...but there might be agencies who hire for better paying nanny jobs--

Thank you so much for the input!! I have been thinking of looking into HR positions, possibly recruiting for a company like Aerotek to start... A nanny job is also an idea, but daycares just do NOT pay enough for the degrees I have!!!

What city would everybody recommend to look for a job in HR/recruiting first?? Please take into consideration that I am a single 30 yr old female looking to move alone!!

Uh, you DO know teachers also work in corrections, right? Not all positions are correctional officers; Counselors, GL-09 level, $50,000.00 +; Case Managers, GS-011, $65,000.00 +; Teachers, GS-011, $65,000.00 +; Unit Managers, GS-12, $86,000.00, +...........All at a much higher annual salary and a much better retirement annuity system than state level paid teachers. Can a teacher retire at 50 years old, with only 20 years of service?

I checked the TX dept of corrections employment site--there are no postings for teachers listed...
the case managers and counselors require training and certification as say TLETS which is law enforcement certification or substance abuse certification

http://168.51.178.33/webapp/CareerWe...ing.jsp?page=1

maybe you are referring to Federal prison opportunities--
this is the link for TEACHER jobs there

and frankly I think an elementary school teacher would be hard pressed to say that her educational background prepared her to teach adults in a federal correction facility...
a general job entering as GL 05 is open to people with a general 4 yr degree and three years of work experience which involved general public service/communication skills and elem teachng would work for that...and starting pay is under 37K a year--

the welfare department here is full of credentialed teachers. a sobering thought on the condtion of our K12 here. my favorite pick for debt free good paying trade is RN.
VE at jr college or military low cost debt free, shortest route is military. next best jr college LVN for 42 units then crossover program of 30 units to RN, by this route you dodge a massive collection of useless mandated electives.

I think even nursing is going to be overcrowded in the next two years--and it is very competitive program around here

the same thing happened with physical therapists--now it takes an MS and specialization to get a job...

frankly if it were me and I would choose speech pathology or library science
sometimes it is possible to get children's librarian certification with fewer credits than other library science areas--maybe like just taking 18 or 24 hrs in addition to your teaching BA and you might could do them all on-line
then get job in city library

and library science has some great technology type of areas
speech pathology is probably going to take an MS to get good job but it has long-term certainty of employment and don't think the field is overcrowded since people are living long after strokes and accidents that affect ability to speak...
