Well i did a little research and Oregon looks like a really nice place. Its about 10 miles east of downtown Toledo. It has a population of about 20,000. There are some nice parks around. The Woodville Mall is just south in the suburb of Northwood. Its also not far from Lake Erie, so there will be some nice beaches to go to.
Heres some info on Oregon.

Beg to differ. I used to work in Northwood, which is right next to Oregon, when I lived in Ohio. It is somewhat of a run-down area, higher crime, especially between the river and I-280 (1/2 Toledo 1/2 Oregon). There are nice parts. There are many much nicer neighboorhoods and areas in Toledo. Maumee, Perrysburg, and Springfield are all much better, nicer areas, more to do, and low crime. If you want to stay on the east side of the river, you could go to Genoa, Woodville, or Millbury, they are farther away from Toledo but all decent areas. I lived in Monclova myself, which is in the outskirts, by the airport. It is a small mostly residential town. My family still lives there. It was ok. Good for families.
Where would you be working? What are your interests? Tell me and I can give you some suggestions of an area that you might be interested in. I lived in the toledo area for 24 years, so I know pretty much the whole area.

I thank both of you!
I work in my home-lucky me. It's my husband who'll be in search of work (I'm sure as many are!). I guess our interests are pretty basic, considering the 'budget', they are movies, arts to some extent, kind-of-fine dining, etc. Then again, we have 2 daughters (12 and 10), so that puts a damper on that . Speaking of the kids, I'm hoping to find an affordable place with schools that are, considering all, pretty decent-doesn't have to be prep-school type. I don't expect to find "The Hamptons" or anything, just a working-class-type of area that isn't all bad. No stray bullets or crack houses down the street, etc. But, then something that's not 'dead'.
My husband and I drove up to Niles, OH. (I'm about 25 miles from Washington DC now). Not to completely knock Niles, as we were only there for 3 hours, but just from the short time there, we are both dead-set against it. It seemed really run down (we were near the shopping mall too). I hope that there a place better than that, again-affordable, around Toledo.
I'm looking at the Toledo area, because it's not farm land, somewhat 'industrious', and far enough away from relatives (who live in Detroit) to where they can't just 'pop in', yet close enough to see them if I want without too much planning.
Thanks again, so much! - Lili

I was born there! but that doesn't help you much. It's a nice city compared to Toledo.

Was born inToledo, but moved as an adult to Oregon, OH and raised my daughter there! Absolutely great as far as safety, friendliness, down home people, but VERY poor in restaurants and shopping. There are 0 establishments in Oregon for fine dining, and the Woodville Mall is laughable...or should I say pathetic? You have to go into toledo for any type of entertainment/shopping.
The Oregon rec league for kids is fantastic, police department and fire is fantastic, almost non existent crime rate, and Maumee Bay Resort is a short drive away. Love the school systems...this is a town where everybody knows your name, I never locked my doors during the day, and there was not ONE TIME in 20 years that I didn't feel safe.
Plus, it's really growing. Upscale housing is booming, and if you like the water, the proximity to the lake is desirable.

Check out Walbridge
Great little town on the outskirts of Oregon. Very affordable, yet, close to all the attractions between Perrysburg and Toledo, just off 280. They are part of Lake Township Schools and it is a decent system from what I have seen (hubby and sis in law both graduated from Lake). Walbridge has much of a small town atmosphere and fee, VERY quiet as for crime and loud neighbors, but still in a great location IMO.

I lived in the Toledo area for a number of years myself, and spent lots of time in Oregon. Until you get down to Perrysburg township, anything east of the Maumee is going to be more ethnic, older, industrial. The port's on that side, as are the refineries, turnpike, industrial parks. Not a slam, I never lived in the suburbs when I lived there, either, and there's no place for a hot dog like Tony Packo's (except maybe Rudy's on Sylvania avenue)!
Oregon itself borders older neighborhoods/refinery at one end, and newly developing former ag land at the other. Nice full service hospital (St Charles), and a good (though crowded) commercial corridor along route 2.
There's no substitute for a live visit -- a chamber of commerce glossy can make the love canal look like beverly hills. And, statistics don't mean squat -- the fact that the average depth of a river is 2 feet means nothing to the guy who's drowning in a ten-foot section.
If your travels will take you north into Michigan, you might consider looking at Sylvania or Sylvania Township. Oregon's a good jumping off point for places east, particularly Cedar Point!
