Grocery stores in Toledo - recommendations?
Howdy -
I'm moving to Bowling Green in a week, and am eager to hear recommendations about the best grocery stores in Toledo. I usually do most of my shopping at Meijer and Trader Joe's where I live now, and occasionally hit some of our big Asian food markets. I'm really interested in learning about the range of stores in Toledo, and perhaps in AA and Detroit - specialty markets, farmer's markets, international stores, etc...
I appreciate your help !

Welcome back to the forum!
Ahh, so I see you decided to find a home in BG. I wish you the best. As far as markets, I'll have to throw out a few now, and if something else comes to mind I'll reply again.
- The Anderson's. I usually go to the one in Maumee.
- There's a Meijer's in BG across I-75 heading east on Wooster St.
- The closest Trader Joe's to you will be the one in Ann Arbor, MI. It's a beautiful college town (yes, OSU fans can be civil); I do recommend you check it out. While you're there, I do recommend the Whole Foods too.
- As far as farmer's markets, I'm sure Wood Co. would have one being a large agricultural county. Ours it at the Hancock Co. Fairgrounds every Thursday after 4:30pm or so. The hours are posted on a billboard on the corner of Main St. and Sandusky St.
- We have two kiosks in Findlay with good local produce. The family farm is Suder's and they are located on N. Main St. a block south of Trenton Ave. and out on Tiffin Ave. near the Panera Bread Co. and McDonald's.
- If you REALLY want to go off the map there's Wolfe's Produce out on St. Rte. 37 SE of Findlay headed to 15/23. I will tell you, however, I've never picked a bad batch of sweet corn from that place.
- For Asian foods, again I'll shell out a couple in findlay, because those are right off the top of my head. Tee Oriental Foods which seemed to be pretty authentic ingredients before they moved closer downtown. I haven't been there since the relocation, though. Then there's another Asian market on Tiffin Ave., which is new. I've never been in it, and can't remember the store name. It was located in the Carriage house Plaza on Tiffin Ave. before the Tiffin Ave./Fostoria Ave. fork.
- The Squeaker's in Bowling Green might have food to pique your interest as well.
I know this is a little lopsided to the south, but I'll try to remember anything more in the Toledo area. I'm sure there are, they just haven't dawned on me yet.

Wow - thanks Art! Findlay is not too far from BG, and it looks like it might be worth a trip down occasionally. Thanks for the advice - I'd love to hear about more places in Toledo - and any word of a Trader Joe's opening in the Glass City?

You're welcome.
Regarding Trader Joe's in Toledo, there's none that I heard. Then again, we're far enough away that we don't keep close tabs on Toledo commerce. However, If there was news of one coming in, I'm sure they'd put it in the Toledo Blade.

All mentioned are excellent recommendations
Especially if you can get a chance to head up to AA... great college town, lots to see.
Another local shopper is Giant Eagle. They are more pricey than Meijers, but usually have pretty good meat sales and good fruits and veggies.

When I lived in Toledo they had a local farmers market called Monnetts. Produce was very good and prices were usually cheaper than the grocery stores. Now that they have expanded all over the place I don't know how cheap they are anymore. We also bought all of our meat through a meat market called K and J's. Meat prices were cheaper and was of better quality than the grocery stores as well. Boy do I miss Kand J's. In every other city I lived in going to Meat Market meant higher prices as it was a "speciality store".
