LaGrange neighborhood in Toledo
Just wondered if any local Toledo-ans could tell me about the LaGrange neighborhood. I'm looking at purchasing some rental property there.
From what I remember when I drove through a couple years ago, it was decent... scruffy, but decent. Anyone concur or have thoughts?
The "What's Toledo Really Like" thread was informative... but if anyone has more specific info on Lagrange area, please share.
Thanks!

I wouldn't recommend it.
Even if someone offered to let me live in a house (off Lagrange) for a year.....RENT FREE, in exchange for just cutting the grass and shoveling the snow, I wouldn't want any part of that deal.

Has it really gone downhill that much? Last time I went (several years ago) there will still some decent parts. Did the riot kill the neighborhood? That's a shame. When I was younger, I would go there for the Polish Festival. Those were good times....

My grandparents lived on Beaumont, which I believe is off of Lagrange. It was a Polish neighborhood back then and yes, I used to go to the Polish Festivals too...Kielbasa, perogies, gwumpkies (sp?)..YUM!!
It used to be a quiet, settled neighborhood where everyone knew everyone (my dad grew up there), but when my grandparents sold their home and moved in the 70's, it was starting to go downhill a little already.

I was last near there in '05 visiting a friend, who had another friend in that neighborhood. The block I was on was working-class, a little unkempt but decent.
If its "block-by-block" in that area now, I'll probably just have to wait until I have time to drive in and take a look. Without giving too much info away, the home I saw listed is just southeast of Manhattan & Stickney.
How bad were the 2005 riots? What areas of Toledo did they really knock out?
Thanks!
John

Below is a link to a stroy about the riot. It didn't last for days, but it occured near the Lagrange area. The riot occurred in Oct. 2005 so I'm not sure if you visited before or after the riot. I can't imagine that all of the decent pockets would be gone within two years but ya never know.

Reading that kind of leaves me speechless...
It was August '05 when I was there.

yikes
The only thing I can think of is maybe you were in the Lagrange area on a lucky day. North Toledo is the worst of the worst. The riots didn't kill it- the riots were just a characteristic. The gas stations and banks in the area are weekly targets of robbery. Run. Run fast and don't look back.

Wouldn't live there for free. Continuing to get worse and worse. Plus, don't know if even having rental property there would be worth it.
