I finally saw Toledo--YIKES!
Well, I have been posting on and off for about a year asking about what Toledo is like--I finally made two trips up there in the last 2 weeks, and from what I could see, everything on this forum is true. The trip through the downtown section was one of the most depressing areas I've ever seen, and I am from W. PA. Perrysburg was one of the nicest towns I've ever seen in any state (and I've lived in 8 of them). But, there is not one place in Perrysburg that rents to a person with a dog--I drove up and down every street, and called everywhere, and that is a fact. (practically nowhere in this city of, what, 300,000?, rents to people with pets, except for a few apt. complexes that charge an arm and a leg for non-refundable pet deposits.)
I actually paid a deposit on a place off Cherry, on Locust St., that looked OK (neighborhood was a mix of bad and good) but when I went back to move in the next week, it was roach-infested. I didn't unpack my car--I drove straight back to KY and have pretty much given up on Toledo--I now am going to look at Dayton possibly or Ann Arbor, MI-area. I need to move up there to live near family, but am very put off by Toledo. I don't have a lot of money, and will be working temp. clerical jobs at first, most likely. I met some very nice people, and some awful people while I was there visiting--like anywhere, of course.
When people are saying terrible things about a place, and you don't want to believe it for whatever reason, I have come to realize that you are deluding yourself. Check it out in person before you move across the country. I was very, very disappointed.

If you have obtained a job in Toledo, then it is a decent place to live. If you just want to move there and then find something, I must wish you some luck. Northwest Ohio blows as far as jobs go, For instance I have seen jobs in newspapers that pay around $9/hr and require a bachelors degree. Why do they require that because they know they can ask for those requirements and they will still get 100s of applications.

Northwood area
Hello. I appreciate this site so much and the helpful insight from everyone. It really helps the person who is anticipating a move to that area.
We will soon be relocating from NE Ohio to the Toledo area. Employer is in Northwood and would like to stay within 15 minutes of that area. Can anyone give me an idea of good locations to search that would keep me within 15 minutes of Northwood? Also, any helpful info on the neighborhood conditions in that area, cost of living as far as property taxes in the Northwood area, utilities, etc. would be greatly appreciated. Schools are not an issue as our children are all grown. We enjoy parks, eating out and movies. Thanks in advance

Toledo.
Well from my view on things Toledo has not changed that much. The north end still has hooker's cherry st mission is nothing but a pit stop for crackheads, drunks, exc. I was born and raised in this hole, It has good qualities but the bad ones are always overlooked by the upper class. There are over 25 hookers picked up a night and took to jail and released a hour later. The drug problems are just not talked about in the papers. Toledo is more about image, and in the process of creating that image the real problems are only getting worse. I myself have always struggled growing up and my problems only grew worse but i am more then lucky compared to some of them kids that go to schools like lagrange, spring, woodward. I went to chase and woodward. I seen kids run to school because they were looking to get a warm meal.
well aside from the innercity schools, drug problems, hookers, low income houses, Toledo looks good. Big neat bridges cool bars and pretty locations for buildings, I love how the eastside has a good view of the refineries! I bet the air quality is top notch.

If you're going to Northwood, you could live there, or try Oregon Ohio. That has Pearson Park and Maumee Bay Park. Straight out Route 2 is Crane Creek a natural reserve. All three of the parks are beautiful, lots of walking, biking trails. Oregon has really been building up, nice housing, property taxes are low compared to other suburbs because they get ALOT of their taxes from Sun Oil and BP. Water is also extremely low as they have their own water supply and do not buy from others. For instance, I lived in oregon and my quarterly water bill was aroun 40-60 bucks. Then I lived in Sylvania and it was close to 200 a quarter. Police force is great, fire response is volunteer but great, and crime is virtually zero. Not many really nice restaurants tho...one thing I think they are sorely lacking, but a quick hop over to Front Street will get you to "The Docks" which has nice restaurants and you are only 15 minutes from West Toledo...a virtual smorgasboard of restaurants.
