Moving to Lucas County--Q's about school districts
My family will be moving to Toledo area soon from Michigan. I was doing some research on line about school districts and subburbs to live in. Does anyone have any children attending school in either of following school districts: Springfield school district (Holland area), Anthony Wayne school district, Sylvania school district. I have a child in elementary, middle school, and high school so I am interested in any info that might help me decide where to start house hunting. Test scores?? Taxes??? Thanks.

Anthony Wayne and Sylvania both have good school systems. Springfield is just ok...not as good as AW and Sylvania, but not as bad at all as Toledo public.

If you are looking at all of those areas, don't rule out Washington Local Schools. I don't know what the current situation is, but WLS still has to be better than Toledo Schools as a whole.

I live in Perrysburg, which has a top notch College Prep HS school. They also have a really innovative JR High "teem" learning program. As for the others, it depends on if you want to live in a rural area or a city area. Springfield has a lot of issues with passing bond issues , also Maumee is a lovely town and you get more bang for your buck there then in P-burg. I know for sure that you don't want to get anywhere near Toledo Public. Heck I wouldn't even consider living in Toledo again.

When I lived in Toledo, I heard alot of good things about Sylvaina..I personally attended Toledo Public.Went to a top tier law school and currently clerk for a well known federal judge in Washington. My feeling is its not so much the school but how well the parents raise the kid...But again alot of people like the Sylvaina school district.

Anthony Wayne schools have always been wonderful. I grew up in Waterville and received an excellent education at Waterville Elementary, Fallen Timbers Middle School (that's what it was called back then), and Anthony Wayne High School. The system has a strong parental support system and academics, band, and sports are greatly encouraged and supported by the community. Most of my classmates have grown into quite successful adults and contributors to society.
Waterville was a safe, small town with old-fashioned values...a utopia, really, now that I look back on it. I wish all children had the wonderful childhood that we had growing up in that quaint, friendly little town. I am actually writing a series of children's stories based on my childhood experiences in Waterville.

School Districts
They are all suburban and not part of TPS-Toledo Public Schools(inner city) Springfield is okay...mix of black and white. Anthony Wayne is nice and more rural if thats what you want. Sylvania is also very nice and are located in more busy areas-not downtown just alot of businesses, food, stoplights.
Ottawa Hills are nice, as well as Perrysburg schools(upper class) Maumee is okay too.

The best public school districts in the Toledo area are Ottawa Hills, Perrysburg, and Sylvania. All three offer an experience comparable to the private "college prep" schools in town like St. John's, and typically produce an equal number of National Merit Finalists, Ivy League candidates, and the like.

Schoolmatters.com is a good site to look for district info. It gives test scores for districts and individual schools within those districts as well as listing the percentage of economically disadvantaged students, percentage of parents who graduated high school and college, and tons more info. The info is based on the S & P. Good luck!

Springfield is much more than OK
Hello there!
Please do not be put off by the remarks about the Springfield district. We are just as competitive and offer the same (if not better) courses. We do have a greater diversity in our ethnic mix, but that is not a negative in the real world. Our schools devote a great deal of time to character education also. Springfield is one of the most solid financial districts in Lucas County. Our board is fiscally responsible and we have passed most of our levies. We moved here in August 2005 from Eastern Ohio. We move quite a bit and this is our 4th school district. We are quite happy here and I'm very active and involved in the middle school and high school where my children currently attend. The staff in both buildings are truly student oriented and there is a great amount of communication to/for parents. Just as an aside, Springfield had to adjust its grading scale to match the other surrounding districts - for many years, our scale was much tougher. The high school also offers Chinese culture/language and are investigating adding more contemporary languages (i.e. - Arabic, Russian, etc.). Again, don't be put off by other comments: Come and tour our schools and district and speak with the parents. I think you'll find a community and parents that strongly support the school system. Good Luck!
