I am considering moving to a larger home in Toledo. I have three young children (4 and under) with a fourth on the way. We are a Christian homeschooling family and I don't know anything about Toledo and what parts are more unsafe than others. We are currenty in the country in Michigan, but due to lower cost of living are considering a move to Ohio.

The home we are considering is on Knower street, which from what I understand is off of Broadway near South Avenue. We have looked at the house and tken a drive around the area, but there weren't too many people out to talk to and try to get a feel for the area. I've heard parts of South are risky, but this area isn't too bad. Would you move to this area with three, soon to be 4 very young children?

Sarah

No, I personally wouldn't live off of Broadway with or without children. That area has always been a high-crime rate area. My husband and I lived on Broadway just after we got married 27 years ago. Our backyard was on the Maumee River and we were next to a small marina where we kept our boat. We only stayed there a year and a half because of the crime going on around us almost daily...thefts, break-ins, shootings, drug raids, muggings, etc. If I remember right, we weren't too far from South Avenue.

Maybe things have changed, but the last time I was up there for a visit (3 years ago) and drove around the Broadway area, it looked like it had actually gone downhill. Maybe someone who lives there now can give you more insight.

NO! I spent 13 years living off Western and Corinth. That whole area has gone down hill and I wouldn't want my kids anywhere near there. Especially if you are considering public schooling in the future once they get older. I suggest Bowling Green if you still want to be in a rural area. I can't imagine moving from farm to city like that. Not to mention if the wind is blowing the right way in that area all you smell is the ZOO!
Are you sure the cost of living is lower in Toledo? I know many who are moving to Michigan due to the high cost of utilities (we pay some of the highest in the state) and the taxes.

That's not a great area. Parts of South Toledo are fine though, but stick around the Bowsher High School area.

I recommend West Toledo or Point Place.

Start or Whitmer School Districts.

Stay away from the South end of Toledo. There are more major crimes commited there than almost anywhere else in the city. Look in West Toledo, Sylvania, Perrysburg, or if you prefer a Michigan address, Bedford or Lambertville.

Not all of South Toledo is dangerous. In fact, when you get south of Glendale Ave you'll find some of the nicest neighborhoods in the city. The area on River Road south of Glendale has the largest and nicest homes in the city, and the nearby Beverly area is very comparable to Old Orchard in West Toledo.

However, the area you mention is not a good area of Toledo.

Toledo, it use to be a nice place to live, good people, and memories. I moved away from there 10 yrs ago, and its the best decision I've ever made.

NO to Broadway/South Ave even if the house is free. My nephew lives on South with his mother so I know. Glendale area is nice. Swanton is county and nice. We moved to Temperance/Lambertville due to lower taxes and utilities. We love it here. I lived off Talmadge, 3 minutes from Westfield shopping center for 6 years and loved the neighborhood. Sylvania and Perrysburg are by far the best place to live but, the taxes are outrageous. Maumee is a safe area, not sure of the taxes though. West Toledo is also very nice and taxes are lower. Check out Temperance area! Hope this helped, Jan
