Default Relocating To Toledo

Hi, I have never been to Toledo in my life, but I am very seriously considering relocating to the area for law school. I plan on visiting the Toledo area before making a decision about moving, and I would like to get some information about living arrangements, so I can make the most efficient use of my time while in the area.

Here are a couple of living options I have found:

- LaSalle Apartments (location sounds nice, but is this building clean/safe?)

- Lake of the Woods Apartments (Nice price, buildings look nice)

- Wood Ridge Apartments (spacious, washer/dryer in unit, more expensive than other options)

- Cloisters (look very nice, reasonably priced)

- Hunter's Ridge Apartments (VERY CHEAP, recently remodeled, look very nice but I have read many negative things about the area and the complex)

I own a vehicle and will have one in Toledo, but I would prefer something that is located within a reasonable driving distance of UT.

I would like to a find a place that is close to restaurants, bar/grill, tavern, etc. That is why LaSalle is appealing, because it is downtown. I am in my late 20s, so proximity to college bars and nightclubs isn't necessary, but it would be nice to be within walking distance, or a short drive, of a restaurant, bar, etc. so I can grab a beer/bite to eat on a Friday night without driving across town.

Safety is another concern. I own a new vehicle and I do not want to live in a neighborhood where it will be broken into or stolen if I leave it parked on the street. I am sure Toledo has its fair share of rough areas, like any other city.

Thank you very much in advance for any information you are able to share, it is greatly appreciated.

Maybe you can find a house to rent in the Old Orchard neighborhood...it is within walking distance to UT and is safe (or was when I lived there).

By the way, can anyone tell me if the Stein and Pitcher is still open? That was a favorite hangout for UT students in the 70's and 80's.

Is any part of Toledo happening? I have never been to Toledo in my life. Like I said, I am planning on visiting within the next few weeks, and I am attempting to gather some information, so I know what areas to check out while I am in the area.

I was talking with someone earlier who told me Toledo is not as bad as a lot of people make it out to be. I know Toledo is no Paris, Tokyo, New York City, etc. but there has to be something decent in the city???

Are there apartments or townhouses in the Old Orchard neighborhood? I would prefer to stay away from renting a house.

Thank you in advance for any advice or insight.

I have seen apts in Old Orchard posted on Craigslist/Toledo. I'm also relocating to Toledo and am not familiar with the area. A couple of my friends are alums of UT and indicate Old Orchard is a great area, can walk to UT. I'm not sure about the happening areas. There's an area called "The Docks" that I think is downtown ? where there are restaurants and bars, but I don't know about the living situation... I've read on other threads on this site that northeast and southeast areas of Toledo aren't good, and not to go too much east of campus.

The docks are on the east side, just across the river from downtown. It is a fun place. You wouldn't want to live on the east side. Not far from the docks isn't pretty.

There are some bars downtown like Pub St. George, but the best part of Toledo would be west Toledo. There are many restaurants and bars, along with the mall there. Getting to UT isn't that hard in Toledo. I would find a place to live that I liked first, then deal with the rest.

There are a number of apartments by UT so you shouldn't have a problem finding one. Just make sure you look around a lot and check out reviews.

There is a lot happening on Monroe St. That's where the mall is and tons of restaurants. You will always have a place to eat in Toledo, that's for sure. There are some fun bars near campus as well, my favorites included Jake's and Mulvaney's Bunker. UT puts on some great events as well. Getting involved on campus and going to events always keeps you busy and entertained.

If you like concerts there is Headliners that puts on a lot of shows. Most of the bands are local or underground, but they have some larger shows once in a while.

Other than that, Toledo is just like any other city. It has it's good parts and bad, boring and entertaining. It just depends on what you're in to.

Old Orchard is still a really nice area. I believe Jamestown apartments are located there. You may also want to check out Oakwood, Country Club, and Steeplechase. All close by and nice.

Good luck deciding!

Well as far as apartments go, I'd avoid Cloisters (I lived there for 4 years, the place is an absolute nightmare and is now known as hood rat central) now you know why it's so cheap.

The other apts. I'm not sure of. But as other posters here have mentioned the old orchard area is very nice and is within walking distance of univ. of toledo. I've never been in the old Lasalle bldg. (it used to be Macy's many, many years ago) some have said it's nice, others weren't crazy about it. You should come see these places for yourself.

Toledo itself isn't a very big downtown action place. You might have to branch out from downtown for any active restaurants/bars.

Best of luck.

NJRes-- One of the things to keep in mind about Toledo is.. It only takes a max of 20 mins to get ANYWHERE in the city. You can literally travel from one end to the other within 20 mins. So since you have your own transportation.. you can truly open yourself up to living anywhere. Certainly being near the University is a bonus.. but if you don't like the living options around there, you could even go to Maumee and still be within 20 mins of the School.

My Opinions:

LaSalle Apartments - Downtown isn't a "happening spot" but the apartments are nice.. as a single female, I'd think twice about it.. but that's me

- Lake of the Woods Apartments - last time I saw these they were fine.. not Uber nice, but certainly acceptable.

- Wood Ridge Apartments- Not familiar with these, but McCord Rd tends to have some nice apartments on it.

- Cloisters -- So-So... I'd prolly take the other poster to heart and avoid this one

- Hunter's Ridge Apartments : Dont know
