Toledo is OK. Like others have said, crime is low and UT is a nice campus. There are plenty of bars and several malls nearby. Fifth Third stadium is always fun in the summer and the new arena should be just as fun when it is completed. The Docks on the east side are a great time too.
Getting around Toledo is easy too. The only delays are usually construction and the weather.
Central Toledo is the more run down area of Toledo. West Toledo is about the nicest area. East Toledo has Tony Packos. The suburbs are good too.
The mayor's skills at running Toledo are questionable as others have stated. Currently, there is another campaign to have him removed.

Toledo is not that bad but to say it has a great mayor is quite a stretch!

It seems like a generally nice enough town to me when I have visited. If you know people in the area; it is an average enjoyable city. Fifth third Park downtown is a great ball park, and I enjoy winter, so the weather is not something I can knock on Toledo. Just like any city, the good neighborhoods are good, the bad ones are to be avoided. It doesn't seem so bad to me at all.

I spent a good part of my youth along the Alexis Road corridor, and it has noticably declined over the years. There are still plenty of nice areas around the UT campus -- Old Orchard and Ottawa Hills in particular. If one is willing to drive a bit, consider Sylvania or Maumee.

I told her Alexis Road reminded me of West 38th Street in Indianapolis. I remember when I was a wee lad in Monroe, MI and we used to go to the Northtown mall off Alexis and Telegraph. It is remarkable what that area looks like now compared to the early 90's, hence the West 38th comparison.
As an aside, to keep prevent myself from rambling about Indy in a Toledo thread, Perrysburg is a nice suburb of Toledo as well. It is right off 75 so commuting to UT would be a easy.

Man, I can remember when North Towne opened in the early 80s. That was the hot area back then. And the West 38th Street comparison is fair for that part of Alexis Road. The area between Lewis and Secor, and then out towards Sylvania, is a bit more stable, although it is more run down than it was then.
In addition to Perrysburg, Holland is decent, too.
Quick aside: Nice to see another Toledo-area native now Indy resident on the board. Go Colts! Now back to the Toledo talk........

I go to UT too, and yes those unfortunate events did happen, but I also feel very safe as a student living on campus. The campus police do their job very well. Anyone with common sense who doesn't venture too far off to where they aren't supposed to be should be fine as well.

It's not just Toledo....I live in Charleston, SC ("The Friendliest City in America" several times over) and we have muggings, robberies, rapes, and murders several times a week. It used to be just in the "bad" part of town, but now it's also in the college area and tourist areas. Same goes for Charlotte, Orlando, Atlanta, Savannah, etc. Crime is everywhere these days, sad to say.
I grew up out in Waterville, which was a safe utopia - a wonderful family-oriented town. I guess it still is. It's a little ways out, but my dad commuted to Toledo daily for work for 30 years and never complained. Our parents wanted us in Anthony Wayne Schools and life in a small town - which was perfect!

It's not secluded to UT. I've heard stories similar at OSU and OU. I've actually heard of a couple pistol whippings, a shooting or two, and stabbings at OU.. a traditionally safe school.
