I attended BG roughly 10 years ago. There were not really any "bad" areas as far as violent crime, but there were areas that look "ghetto" due to students trashing the place and rental management not maintaining their properties. Greenbriar Properties was the absolute worst! It seems like they own nearly everything in town, but do yourself a favor and avoid them at all costs.

The biggest thing to deal with is the typical drunken college student being loud and stupid.

BG has a really good student housing center. Contact them and see if they have any suggestions.

Since I am an undergrad, I only know of the undergrad areas. Some of the real estate companies have graduate housing, so you want want to ask them about that. Some of the companies are: Mecca BG, John Newlove realty, Greenbriar, and I am sure you can find others on Google. Hope this helps.

I had a decent experience with Greenbriar, but, I made a point to try to get to know the names of the office staff (whenever I paid the rent I made some small talk with them.) That helps alot.

I had one major problem with the apartment, and when that occurred, I wasn't afraid to call them every morning until it got fixed. Was ready to write letters, send it certified mail, etc. Don't take things like that personally - just be prepared to do them because that's normally the way it is. You have to speak up and use the appropriate channels to command their attention. They did resolve the problem and I would say for the most part I was satisfied.

Most college town apartment rental companies are going to be on the unfriendly and difficult side. There are very few in any town that get stellar ratings. They're just really doing it for the financial upside alone, and don't have any personal investment in the buildings.

If you want a landlord who is really going to care about and look after you while you're in college, look through the newspaper ads or craigslist for someone who lives in town, and just owns one or two buildings.
