We live in the south suburbs and I have heard the tornado sirens go off twice this year.
It always freaks me out - the dogs go wild - then i think of big f5 tornados

usually around here they are just pip squeaks compared to missouri , kansas , oklahoma
i have a lot of respect for you folks

I took that at work, btw.

Yes indeed. Tornadoes are not boring at all. My point is that Buxton is, because it avoids all the storms for some reason.

We don't have any for whatever reason, when tornadoes come they just drop in uninvited unless you're watching TV and they have the little banner at the top or a news brief. I wonder why NYC has no sirens, especially since tornadoes do occur.

NYC has no tornado sirens - I really find that hard to imagine as the warning sirens are used for other purposes- it was my original understanding the sirens were part of the civil defense such as a nuclear threat

so is the whole state of ny like this or just nyc?

tornadoes occur anywhere they are not isolated to the fields of kansas
they can interrupt a city or even a valley all that is a myth about them not going in cities or mountains or even near a body of water.
obviously i always wondered if the cities would make the tornado short lived if it would disrupt its lifecycle due to all the debris

Yeah, middle and west Tennessee are no strangers to tornadoes! Not as common in the eastern part of the state due to the hilly terrain, but they are not unheard of, especially this year - the mountains had no effect on them at all.

The last time I heard them was back in April of 2011. Yeah they were pretty scary though because that was my first time hearing them because they were added in 2010.

I've only been through one tornado warning, and that was back in 07. But earlier this summer, the tornado sirens went off on a clear day, and i knew it wasn't a test because it was the wrong time. And the scary part was, I live only 20 miles west of a NUCLEAR POWER PLANT. I though that there was a meltdown or something, it freaked me out. But about an hour later, the news said that the sirens went off on accident.

Theories that certain terrain works to prevent tornadoes usually end up failing.

I hear tornado sirens every Friday at 11AM when they test them. lol

But seriously, I think we had one tornado warning back in April or May. I think that's the only time the sirens have actually been used this year. But we usually get at least 1 or 2 warnings per year. They are usually just doppler radar indicated tornadoes and nothing actually touches down. But this summer has been so dry, we've barely had any storms, let alone tornadoes.
