It's odd to me that there are so few police officers walking around Toronto to keep the peace, etc. In many US cities, you will see cops actively patrolling neighbourhoods, etc., especially around touristy areas. You almost never heard of homicides occurring in downtown areas of America's cities.. in Canada, it seems to happen all the time.

This is not really happening all the time.. but here anything like this makes the news.
This part of downtown is not really that popular with tourist and in my opinion is very residential. Yes there are restaurants and bars, but it is not like in the Entertainment District of Toronto or other popular tourist areas where you will see police presence. In my opinion these types of incidences which are very uncommon in Toronto are usually things that happen related to night club/bar fights or gang targets. Random acts of violence like this (ex this victim did not know the attackers) appears very uncommon in this city. Most of the time these incidences are gang related and the victims knows that people attacking/ or the gang. Bi-standers may get harmed... but are not the target. Again this is not common in Toronto which makes it even more sad.
I got to say I walk all over this city as a woman alone a night and I have never had any problems. That area would be one that I would never worry about personally as it has a good amount a traffic going by and good amount of night life.
I doubt this situation could have been avoided as there was not weapons involved to my understanding. I am not sure if there was alcohol involved. If it proven that the people who beat this poor man to death were drinking at the night club and left intoxicated I would wonder if the night club could be held liable to some degree.
Again this not a common situation in Toronto.
