the subways shut down at 1:45-2:00am (depending on which way you are going) I think that pretty much seals the deal.
Certain areas may be more lively than others, but definitely not a 24 hour city.
While having a city having 24-hour subway service strengthens the case that said city is a 24-hour city, not having it doesn't preclude the possibility. This especially in North American cities in general and even moreso in American cities that are for the most part designed around the car.
What Toronto does have is a 24-hour busline that during its 'blue night' service offers transit along every second major avenue (in general).
You are right though, certain areas are livelier than others, but that is the case for all cities, 24-hour-ones included.
Regardless, unless things have changed since early 2008 the TTC is set to offer 24-hour subway service within 2 years.
umm not even close.. take a look around at 4:00 am ... maybe a raccon.. not even a bird in sight.. the only people who are "walking around" are people trying to go home, people who are working a nite watch shift going on a break or homeless and crackheads bootycallers and pimps after 3:00 am the city dies, as the only traffic you will see is on yonge with a bus full of drunks returning home to have sex or sleep.
I live mid-town and there are a number of 24-hour stores around here. In addition to gas stations and convenience stores, there are two grocery stores and at least one restaurant. Most of that is easily walkable. Gangs are not a factor except is certain communities.
I tried to walk a girl to her car around 1am the other day and she was having none of it. She insisted the area (Queen West at Gladstone) was perfectly safe.
Atlanta a 24-hour city. You have got to be kidding me. There are not even that many people walking around in Atlanta in the day. It is a high-crime suburban-type hellhole.
From my experience it is about a "20 hour" a day city. That said the only places in the USA you find people on the streets all hours are New York, Las Vegas, Atlanta and maybe Miami.
Atlanta? You kidding me? Where in Atlanta did you see people after 9pm? Downtown is pretty dead, so is midtown and Buckhead. Unless you mean Marietta where all the guns are flowing.. I don't see how.
Back on topic, no, Toronto is _not_ a 24 hour city. A 15 hour city at best. Let's not count weekends into this. Even in downtown Toronto, there's not much happening past 11pm weekdays.. which is why street festivals are so welcome. They add a lot of hours to this 15 hour city.
Just curious -- for those who say Toronto isn't a 24-hour city, does that affect or change your lifestyle or quality of life? Do you feel limited by what you can do there because of this or is it something you've learned to live with? Do you find other things that you like about the city that make up for this?
Toronto is on my list of places I would live (if I can survive the immigration process) and I'm just wondering if the fact that it isn't a 24-hour city is affecting anyone's life negatively or in ways that are making him/her want to leave? Are there any 24-hour diners in the post-clubbing hours?
