I am a single woman who will be visiting the Toronto area mid April. I have my train ticket but do not have a hotel yet. What is a good part of town to stay in? It must be uber-clean and safe. I plan to take public transportation and do a lot of walking to see the sites during the day. I don't have to go out at night, but if I do, it would need to be bar or restaurant where I wouldn't stick out like a sore thumb.
Any hints, tips, pointers you can provide is greatly appreciated.
I'd suggest Yonge and Eglinton (very safe, lots of neat stores, right on the subway line) - it's nicknamed Young and Eligible, but there's a mix of ages and lots of neat pubs, bookstores, etc. Another option is Bay and Bloor (called Yorkville) it's a very upscale part of town (Coach, Prada, etc). I'd also suggest the Beach, but do not know the area well enough to recommend exactly where to stay. There are other areas too, that's off the top of my head. Toronto is a very safe city for people of all ages, and i hope you ahve a great trip.
I would stay at the Royal York hotel right across the street from the train station. You are walking distance from the CN tower, the art gallery of Ontario, China town, City hall, Island ferries,Sky dome, Rodgers center and so much more. Also I just love the hotel.

The RY is a rip off to be honest. Here's a great site with customer reviews you should take a look at.
