Are there any small cities (not suburbs) within a reasonable commuting distance to York University and/or U of T?

Watertown is the closest American city and Syracuse is 100 miles from the border. Many people from that part of Ontario come to both to shop.

Just to clear things up, I don't want to live in an urban area. I'm looking for either small town/city or suburban, with a preference for a small town or city. I'm not looking for inner-city neighborhoods in TO.

The six former boroughs were Etobicoke, East York, York, North York and Scarborough. From what you are describing you are looking at Scarborough.

Which is east Toronto. Good Luck.
