After debating the move for over a year, we have finally decided to move to Toronto from Montreal (merci Pauline!) Naturally we are in the process of understanding and untangling Toronto's vast web of suburbs, cities, and towns. Ideally we would like to move somewhere that feels "familiar ". To give you and idea, we are of Indian origin, live in Westmount, and are perfectly bilingual. With that said, where in Toronto (and surrounding environs) would we meet other families with perhaps not exactly similar but close enough background to ease the transition? Does anyone know where the ex-montreal anglos move to and settle in Toronto during the last referendum(s)?? Thanks for any help!!
I think it will be more useful if you describe what kind of neighourhood you are looking for. Not everyone has lived in Montreal or Westmount. There might be no place similar to it too.
Hello, I suggest Milton /Ontario, by train from Toronto 45 min. away. It is a suburb, beautiful, houses are not as expensive as in Mississauga or even Toronto. People from all sorts of background live here,Panjabi, Hindu, Muslims, Chinese, Europeans. It is very popular for Indien People to establish their live here.In 2007 Milton had 48 000 inhabitants, now already exceeding 100 000. I f you like more action than Mississauga is better for you! Good luck!
Most South Asians live in Brampton (expect Gurdwaras, temples, mosques, community centres, and large Indian supermarkets like Golden Groceries) Malton/Rexdale (kind of dumpy), and Mississauga. The issue is that none of these areas of the GTA even remotely resemble Westmount or Montreal to any relative degree. The Westmount vibe could possibly be felt in the Bloor west Village, High Park/Roncesvalles area, populated mostly by people of European origin.
No no, you don't want to live in Brampton. Too crowded, people start to relocate from there because they are fed up.Also you would NOT like Bloor area. I highly recommend MILTON...family friendly, well priced houses large and small and multicultural, but less crowded.

^Nothing against Milton, but it would be quite the adjustment from Westmount, Montreal.
In terms of the Toronto equivalent to Westmount: Rosedale is touted as the most obvious, but that's really just a bunch of mansions on a ravine. Virtually impossible to find a house there for less than $2 million. It's more the equivalent of Upper Westmount. Actually, the Davenport hill area around Casa Loma may remind one more of Westmount.
Other areas - more akin to lower Westmount: would be Summerhill and parts of the Annex.
The general area to look would be between Bathurst and Bayview, Bloor and St. Clair.
