High Park is not within 15 minutes subway ride to the core. More like 30 minutes+.

yep good point, though it depends on definition of 'the core' (some might say yonge/bloor is core in which case it is about 15 minutes on a good day) ... intersections are preferred over terms like core.

I don't know Montreal at all but I'd say Danforth, Davisville and Yonge, St. Clair and Yonge (if you can find a place in your price range), and Bloor West Village for starters. If you are willing to streetcar it (vs. subway) to where ever you work, there will be more options.

The downtown core is big, so it helps to know what part you will be working in before choosing a location to live.

Considering the Montreal hoods OP named, might perhaps Kensington Market fit best?

I've gone through everyone's posts and read some other threads too. I have a good enough idea to start from. The next thing is to visit Toronto on the weekends, in the spring. It'd be a poor thing to roam the streets in this kind of weather

Cheers

I really don't know where you all rent. I've always managed to live on the subway line, close to downtown, in a nice building for less than $1000 for a 1 bedroom. I paid $1400 for a whole house at Bloor and Symington three years ago. You people either have money to burn or you don't look very hard.
