I am a Canadian who has been living in the US for the past 17 years. I am in the process of moving back home to the Niagara area to be closer to my parents as they are getting older. I have been on the phone today calling banks about opening a checking account and everyone of them I've called so far all have monthly fees ranging from $4.00-$15.00 per month just to have the account. And if you go over the (very) limited number of transactions they will charge you a fee. I have had a free checking account for years in the states and would like to find one up here if it exists?

haha, I had a hard time adjusting to that myself when just arrived from the US, where every service I had was free ( no monthly fee, no-fee money order, no-fee transaction), the first time I went to get a money order to pay the deposit of my rent I was charged $7.5!
Fortunately I finally found one: TD all inclusive checking account ( as a Canadian native, shouldn't you be writing chequeing or something like that? I haven't got used to it so it's still checking for me...). As long as you keep a minimum balance of $5000, everything is free, no monthly charge, you can get money order for free too, you may need to also open a borderless US$ account to get the free service benefit, but I am not certain about that since I already got one before I opened the all inclusive Canadian $ account
Curious though, how many cheques do you write a month? Canadians don't seem so reliant on cheques anymore. All my bills are online and any personal cheques I write are very, very few and far between.
I know in the US I still see people writing cheques in grocery stores, but that hasn't been an option in Canada for many, many years.
I am surprised nobody recommended Tangerine. You can deposit or withdraw using Scotiabanks' ATMs.
Canadian banks are crazy, with all sorts of insane fees one hardly sees in the US. I refuse to deal with them unless I have to (their service is very good and prompt though).

I remember seeing people writing checks in grocery stores and didn't quite understand why, since it really slowed down the already-long line which could be pretty annoying. But I am guessing those are the people who want to only spend the money they have in the bank as opposed to using credit card and loosing track of their spending. It's probably a good idea for people with a spending problem. I don't do any of those, including balancing check book - I just don't really spend much and I know even if I double/triple my spending for a given month I would still have more than enough money left in my bank account.

Don't kid yourself, there are plenty of banking fees in the US.

K thank you. I'm with Tangerine and it is the best bank I've ever experienced. There are really no fees at all so long as you withdraw from Scotia Bank. You can also pay interac to pretty much any merchant and there will be no debit fees at the end of the month either.
Every second time I go to pay for something with my card, I get asked about it, but everybody just shrugs it off and assumes it can't be true. Whatever, keep paying out of your butt then.
