Hi everyone,

We are planning a move from west coast and our child will be going to high school this year. We are looking at schools in Markham and Richmond hill area. Most of the schools have admissions closed for pre IB program for the coming year. What are our kid's chances of getting into IB program if we buy/rent in the same school district.
Also looking for recommendations on schools with good IB and AP programs. We called up few schools and were informed its rare, seats become available later. The actual IB program starts in grade 11, so is there any chance of getting into it then or there is no hope? Currently our kid is enrolled in advanced program and is academically inclined.

will appreciate any help,

thanks

I'm pretty sure that living within the school district would put your child ahead of students outside the district to get admitted. Also, I'm pretty sure that they could still be admitted for the full program in Grade 11... some students would be dropping out of the program after grade 10, so there would be spots opening. I have no idea what admission criteria the schools would use at that point, though. You'd be better off contacting the IB program coordinators at the schools in question, and they would give you a better idea of how to make sure that your child has a chance of getting in next year.

There's just one high school (Bayview) with an IB program listed at the York Regional School Board website. They provide the name and contact info of the coordinator, though: Pages - International Baccalaureate Diploma Program
