I wouldn't say Streetsville is bad at all. Malton is crap, tons of the more affluent residents are leaving--but it's barely even Mississauga anyway. Meadowvale isn't actually that bad, but a lot of dumb teenagers have a ghetto mentality there. That mentality exists a lot in Mississauga, but Meadowvale (otherwise known as MDV-Money Drugs Violence) is one of the worst places for it. The most ghetto area in Mississauga, not counting Malton, is probably just south of Dundas, along Hurontario.
The nicest parts of Mississauga are generally near the lake and the Credit River (Port Credit, Lorne Park, Mineolea, Mississauga Rd, Gordon Woods)--those areas are fairly wealthy though. Also, as far as more middle class areas go, Erin Mills isn't all that bad, nor is Streetsville. I think Applewood is okay too, although it has some sketchy bits...then again, so does Erin Mills.
Mississauga has a low crime rate, but unfortunately a lot of youth have a really ghetto mentality, for no reason. It's not like Brampton, which is actually becoming legitimately ghetto all across, except for a few areas.

The Bridle Path, Rosedale, Forest Hill, etc. are an obvious choice, but they are also quite expensive.
Lawrence Park and Lytton Park are quite nice, so is most of the areas near Yonge St./ Avenue Road. Leaside is nice too. Cedarvale, High Park, and Guildwood are also safe areas.
However, my favourite is the Beaches. Quite safe, the most common problem is the Beaches rich kids doing drugs in the ravine! Veeeery rich houses and families, but also some normal ones as well. But like the others, really expensive.

Most areas of Toronto are safe with few exceptions. Things start to get dicier when you approach the 416/905 border with the one notable exception of South Etobicoke. There is a middle ring between the actual downtown and the 416/905 borderlands that is generally pretty nice and pretty safe.

Lol.. what a completely generic generalization.. You should take a trip into old Mississauga my friend, and actually open you eyes. And by the way.. what does cookie cutter suburban developments have to do with Mississauga not being safe?

Yup typically the crime is towards the toronto side of the city. The western part of mississauga is the least crime-ridden area.
Meadowvale isn't bad at all...the kids dress ghetto but no one really commits crime. It is older than much of the other areas around it, and thus was predominately white middle class until relatively recently.
Going south it gets even safer, when you get into Erin Mills, which is relatively new, the houses get bigger, and as you get closer to Oakville it gets richer.
