I had the reverse situation. I usually had one in Canada (Montreal). When I lived in the States, it was an anomaly -- nobody seemed to have one. (I put one in when I lived in Connecticut, but I didn't bother in my house in Massachusetts.) I don't have one now (Ottawa) but I don't really miss it.

is it worth the discussion here??

In fact, households with garbage disposals end up have way more problem with pipe clogging etc because these irresponsible people start to throw whatever in the sink assuming everything will be disposed of instantly.

Yes. Considering the amount of garbage on CD, it's a timely and apt discussion.

Wow, learn something new every day... Garbage disposals have been the norm in every U.S. city I've lived in.

I've lived in apartments in Minnesota and Texas. All five apartments have disposals. When we moved into our house I had one installed. Over the past 23 year we are on our third one. I thinking it's just one more thing to break that needs fixing. I would be fine without one. I don't cram a bunch of stuff down them like some people do.

They make a bit of noise, but can be quite handy. I got rid of my last one though, since they don't last forever, and now we have an organic waste program in the city.
The expensive ones are very quiet and will take anything that could possibly be ground down.
