Thanks for all the great advice. I also am looking at an apartment somewhere near St Clair Ave close to Warden station. Is that any good?

That may have been true 20 years ago, but that's not been my experience. Of course, cities like NY, Boston, DC, Chicago, San Francisco and Seattle have always had vibrant downtown populations, but that's true now for a lot of mid-sized cities as well. For instance, several of the most vibrant neighborhoods in Columbus, Ohio (where I'm originally from) are clustered near downtown.
