depends what you want,
i grew up in north york, where semidetached houses are selling for $400,000+
great place to grow up, safe, close to the subway, upper middle class,
suburbs are cheaper, Mississauga/Brampton is nice,(not as nice as north york) i lived there for a bit.. good new schools, cheaper houses, for $400,000 you can get a 2 car garage home.
If you don't plan on going to Toronto on a regular basis (ie. for work) but still want relatively easy access to the city, I would recommend looking at communities that are serviced by the GO trains. I don't know them all well, but I like:
- Mississauga's Port Credit and Streetsville areas
- Burlington
- Milton
- Richmond Hill
- Markham
- Stouffville
- Newmarket
- Aurora
- Pickering/Ajax/Whitby/Oshawa
If you don't mind living even a bit further, some nice communities are Guelph, Kitchener/Waterloo/Cambridge, Stratford...the list can go on and on and on......
The best thing for you to do BEFORE you chose a community is to come and spend a week in Toronto, stay somewhere central, and do day trips to various communities. We are doing the same thing in New York/New Jersey right now, and the best information comes from actually speaking with locals in shops and restaurants!
That's a bit hard to answer - there are a wide range of feelings about Scarborough! There are some areas that are less desireable because of crime and gang activity, and then there are some areas that are absolutely beautiful, such as the Bluffs. I personally don't know enough about Scarborough to be able to point you in the right direction - anyone out there who knows Scarborough well?
We are looking for a place to live around Toronto. Good schools, libraries, parks. English speaking. Safe. Middle class. We'd probably rent for a year to get to know the area and then look to buy. Any suggestions on neighborhoods?
Thanks so much.
North York is essentially Toronto, for one thing.
I would highly disreccomend suburbs, you can get so much more in your life by living in Toronto. Essentially what you need is a price range, and I could help you there

I'm in New Jersey now, but was in Pickering for 13 years and I just loved it! You can look in Pickering.
I grew up in North York, it is pricey, but very nice too. How about Thornhill?
