BBC News - Toyota to recall 6.4 million vehicles

Japanese carmaker Toyota is recalling 6.4 million vehicles globally due to five separate issues.

Some 3.5 million vehicles are being recalled to replace a spiral cable attached to the driver's side airbag.

It may be damaged when the steering wheel is turned and result in the airbag not being deployed in a crash.

Other issues include problems with seat rails, steering columns, windscreen wipers and a glitch with the engine starters that poses a fire risk.

Toyota said it was not aware of any vehicle crashes, injuries or fatalities caused by these conditions.

However, it said it had received two reports of fires due to the engine starter problem.

For an airbag recall there should be more exclamation points in the thread subject

So...the OP would prefer that carmakers not issue recalls on their vehicles in order to rectify problems?

I guess that we could return to the days of yesteryear, such as the situation with '53 Buicks equipped with the optional power brakes. A defect in the design of the brake booster on those Buicks could allow all of the brake fluid to be sucked out of the master cylinder, thus leaving the driver with no brakes. Despite many accidents and injuries, and several deaths, GM never acknowledged the problem

Cars of every make and model have always had certain problems that should have been caught during the development or testing stage, but--unfortunately--they were not. What differs from yesteryear to today is the difference in how car mfrs deal with these problems.

Where in the post do you see that opinion expressed? All I see is a single emoticon.

What's another billion payoff to the government to funnel American dollars out of the country? Sound cheap to me.

That's a lot of cars. Wonder how much that will tarnish the Toyota name?

It wont' because Toyota and other japanese makers get a pass, with people thinking that recalls for them mean it's all good, while recalls for domestic makes means all bad. Toyota issuing a recall means they care about their customers, GM issuing a recall means they hate their customers. It's really as simple as that for too many people.

Timely recalls do not tarnish a name, delaying, refusing to recall, or covering up fatal flaws rather than issuing a recall is what tarnishes a name.

They are being proactive. This is not a bad thing. They aren't waiting until many people die (GM).
