Went for a ride in a friends Prius. It's 2 years old and he bought it from a used car dealer at 1000s below what it booked for (First warning sign). It had an Acrid, burnt electrical motor smell that was not normal! He claimed that it was minor and that none of his other friends had a problem with it. His other friends, I found out were refusing to ride in his car again because of the smell. The dealer said it was nothiing???
Ive ridden in one other Prius, another 09 and the smell was there but not nearly as strong. Is this present in all Prius's? I don't know how Toyota can sell a car that smells this bad.

I have rode in two Prius' and never smelt that electrical burning smell but have before in vehicles having bad alternators etc.I am not a huge fan because the Prius is too small for my needs/taste tho.The new hackback road test on TV looked interesting tho.

It's the battery, in particular the heating/cooling elements on the battery. You can also get a lot of surface corrosion on the batteries and electrical components as well that add to the smell. There is a small vent fan in the battery compartment that is supposed to help dissipate the smell, but if the car is closed up for a while or the corrosion is bad it can smell all the time. Just google "Prius battery smell" and you will see pages of discussion on it at Prius forums and personal blogs. It is a pretty normal thing, especially in humid climates and the smell is worse during extreme heat or cold. The smell can be fixed, but it involves some serious surgery of the battery compartment.

Prius battery exploration
Right on! Looks like this problem has been around forever. I doubt my buddy will do anything that involved. Toyota should really cover this under warantee. Looks like the back yard mechanics are doing it on their own!

Quick question... why would you want to ride in a Prius in the first place? And how can you let a friend own one? Friends dont let friends drive Prii. ;-)

+1 for using the world "pompousness" in a sentence.

I would have thought "green" would have smelled more woody and dirty, maybe with a hint of manure. Tell your friend to keep a bag of the stuff in the trunk to cover up the acrid chemical scent.

Wonder what it does to one's lungs?

Could be a Darwin Award in the making.
