We were told it might be a MAP sensor? Any one familiar with these vans?
We don't have any extra money, like most of the world, or we would have towed it to a shop.
Your problem can't be diagnosed by giving general syptoms. Todays computer driven cars can have various problems that can manifest as the same thing. You can have a bad MAP sensor or you may have a bad coil pack or a host of other problems. Bottom line if you start swapping out parts one by one to correct the problem it will probably cost you more in the long run than just taking it to a mechanic. Do you have a check engine light on your dashboard and is it lit. If it is you may want to take your car to Autozone or perhaps another local auto parts store and see if they will run a diagnostic check on your car with their computer, (supposedly many parts suppliers do it for free). That may give you a better idea of whats going on with your car. Good luck to you.

Doesn't sound like something you can fix on your own. My husband is a Toyota Tech. I'll ask him when he gets home and see what he thinks.

Same problem here! I have a 2002 Toyota Sienna as well. And for about two months it would happen on and off that it will start and suddenly die. Then I will start it again and keep foot in gas for about 1 min and then it will be ok. Until I got tired of it and I took it to the dealership and it had to do with some fluid. They changed fluids (somewhere, don't know where in the engine ) and since then everything was ok until 2 weeks ago, and now it does it once a week or so but I am not taking it in again, it did cost about $350.00 and now I want a new car.

It is an idle air control valve that has carbon build up. It is a $200 part brand new. You could easily go to a salvage yard and pick one up. Apparently, they are a very easy fix.
You could get your hubby to pull the IAC valve from the throttle body and clean it with electrical spray cleaner.
