I am curious about this '09 Lexus E350 with only 16.5 K miles. Garaged. The owner is asked $26,500 obo. I am thinking about "hot potatoing" my wife's '03 Accord EX-L V6 before the trans goes. It has 85K on the spedo. While the Lexus may not be my first choice and it a little older model year than I would wish, the miles sound very good. We don't drive that much anyway as both retired. We can afford to buy a new Lexus and usually buy new and keep our cars till they start nickel and diming us and become undependable (12-14 years) I will go look at the car and if I like it, will want to have it looked at by my indi mechanic. Probably offer $22K or 23. Comments please...

In my opinion the Lexus ES is just a gussied up Camry

You could get a newer CPO BMW or Audi for that price

The ES350 is a nice vehicle but it really IS a Camry with nice materials.

If you want a comfortable, midsized vehicle...I'd recommend something along the lines of a new Honda Accord (just as nice, if not nicer, than a 5 year old Lexus ES) or a new Ford Fusion. These two vehicles are pretty much dominating the midsize sedan segment and can be optioned-up to include many luxury car features without the luxury-car premium.

Thanks for the replies. Yes, I know that 350 is basically a Camry. My feeling is that the Lexus is made in Japan and the reliability is a BIG concern to me. Because of that, BMW, MB, Audi are out of the question. I am used to low cost maintanance and I owned a Volvo years ago and not wanting to go down that road again. Focus might be an option and certainly looking at the new Accord and Acura. Of course, those are all over $30K for the EX V6.

Why do you think that the transmission in your wife's Accord is going to go? Accords last a lot longer than 85,000 miles. I think that you have many years and many thousands of miles left in the Accord with no need to switch out.

That particular year , they have not lasted as long as they should have. There is a big discussion here and on Honda forums. The service manager at the dealer has said they usually last over 100K but some have failed even at 60K. Yes, The last 2 Accords we have had lasted 14 years before starting to need work. This model just seemed like it has been more trouble prone than others.

That's a bit overpriced for a 4 year old E350, isn't it?

If you are considering a focus and accord you can get those brand new for well under 26k with the focus under 20

This was a huge problem for the '00-'03/'04 V6 automatics, on both Honda and Acura. There were instances when the transmissions gave out as early as 20,000 miles. It was due to overheating -- something about a poor design on the internals around 2nd gear. Honda never wanted to do a recall, but finally did do one. However, I think you had to be at or below the 7 year/103k (don't ask me why on the mileage) to get the recall done under warranty.

My daughter's '01 Acura CL-S was done under recall by the Acura dealer. The receipts added up to $5300, but I didn't pay anything. Thankfully!

I'd also take a look at the CPO models at a dealer, but the mileage seems great and the car should be super reliable.
