Went to mechanic he said I needed new compressor, was running half hot, he replaced it recharged no change, then said I needed new valve in dash it was gummed up, new one in and recharged, no change. I'm 700 in for parts and labor and mechanic is stumped, any ideas. Thank you.

When you change out the compressor, you ALWAYS change the expansion valve/orifice tube, receiver/dryer, condenser, and flush the lines. The compressor manufacturers require you change all those components otherwise you get no warranty on the compressor part.

Honestly, you need a new mechanic. Sounds like he has no clue what he is doing. Sorry to say, but most decent mechanics would charge more than $700 to replace the compressor and expansion valve (the in-dash valve).

Step one is to throw a set of gauges on it and check the high and low pressures, those numbers will tell you how to proceed.

You probably had a slow leak that could have been fixed with a $50 worth of leak repair and freon.

that usually fixes things and should be the first step imo. i have a slow leak, hoping the recharge i got 3 months ago will last many years.

agree, with what has been said take it elsewhere.

That leak repair stuff is bad news, I avoid it, it can cause more problems than it fixes by closing small passages built into the system (ie: expansion valve or orifice tube).

Plus, if you use leak repair and eventually have to replace the system, it's a pain to flush out of the lines.

I fixed the AC unit on my '95 Dodge Ram pick-up with a top-of-the line stop leak product sold at Wal-mart. That was about 8 years ago and the AC is STILL colder than new.

The AC on my 99 Intrigue stopped blowing cold air about 5 years ago. I recharged a couple of times but it would only hold a charge for about 1 year. I finally used the stop leak product and it's been working ever since.
