There have indeed been teasers perennially. Unfortunately, Toyota seems to have decided that their lineup doesn't need a halo-car. In the 1980s, Toyota was actually a fairly sporty brand... with the Celica, Supra and MR2. And now?

As long as we're dreaming, I'm dreaming that Toyota will plop their NASCAR pushrod-V8 into the new Supra.

The new Supra - due in 2018 is reported to be a hybrid electric/gas developed in concert with BMW. If this is true and this (link) is it... I expect it to be EXTREMELY expensive.

The high cost is almost inevitable, but it really is unfortunate about the high complexity (and likely high weight), replicating the path of the NSX and the GTR. Does anyone build a simple, light-weight sports car anymore - at any price?

2760 lbs for a manual trans FRS/86.
What other "sports car" do you know of besides the Miata that is under 2760 lbs?
In today's market that is lightweight, considering safety, power features, amenities, and a/c, etc.

currently 370Zs, mustangs, camaros, and other big power cars range from 3200 to over 4000 lbs

Alfa romeo 4C is under 2500 lbs, but over $55000, twice the price of an 86.

240s were 2700 lbs

rwd celicas of the 70s and 80s were sub 2600 lbs but they didn't have efficient motors or safety that today's cars have

old Supras and Zs were over 3300 lbs

AE86 was 2200-2400 lbs. With todays market, they could not get one below 2400 lbs I'm sure.
