Well, it always squeaks on start-up... for about 30 seconds..

Could this all be as simple as "it needs a new belt?" (Maybe it's not spinning well enough...) ??

Nothing unusual about a 1993 car with original AC.

OP, I would take the car to a mechanic and have it checked out. If you could smell something, and saw smoke, and now no AC, it could be minor but probably not.

Compressor clutch, or compressor itself?

Should start by seeing if clutch engages under separate power?

My thoughts are the compressor finally gave up the ghost and locked, with the clutch still locked in the belts continued to try to spin the compressor and you "smoked" the clutch which dissipates after about a minute (I've done this myself, after replacing Just a clutch on a system only to realize later it was the compressor).

You almost certainly need a whole new system. When the compressor fails, it sends junk through the rest of the system (plus, it's all old anyway) and just replacing Part of the system will almost certainly leave bits and pieces behind that will prematurely wear the new components. Everything for my vehicle was ~$400 (parts cost), I replaced it all myself as it's simple stuff to replace, was my first time dealing with AC and I'd rank it pretty low on the difficulty scale.
