I saw one recently and was wondering if it was imported or if they are for sale here now.

No, they're available in Mexico, but that's as close as you'll get.

I've only seen one in the US and it was a bit older and imported.
I'm not sure this vehicle has ever been sold in the US

I would LOVE to turn one into a camper!

We had one (1987) and it was 4 wheel drive. Two sliding sunroofs, ice maker and 6-pack cooler in front, captains seats
That bugger could turn on a dime and would give you a nickel back.
Drove it for 385 thousand miles and then had to scrap it due to the high cost of maintaining it.
Still got 300 dollars for it ...

I think the guy who bought it still has it ... Not that many 4 wheel drive available!

The problem was that all the wiring got really dry and thus created electrical problems ...

The bad design was the placement of the engine (mid-engine) which created a bear of a job to do an oil change. The fuel tank lid was on the other side of the driver seat. If you had the car loaded with cargo, you could not check the oil level! To steal the full-size spare, you just needed a small pair of pliers and the spare tire could be removed!

I think for the USA the cabover design might not meet crash/collision standards, which could explain why it hasn't been sold here. Also a bit underpowered for North American needs. It's pretty much sold and used all over the rest of the world.

Because it looks cool?

I'd love to have an old Space Cruiser with the decals on the side, those were neat.
