Another transmission recall.

When are these companies going to realize that CVT's were a very bad idea. Forcing companies to try to gain a few mpg to meet government standards is not working out so well for us.

If you read the recall, it is for the torque converter that is bad not the CVT. Unfortunately you cannot just replace the part, you have to replace the whole CVT. Toyota has been using the CVT's for a long time. I may be wrong but this is the first time I have heard about a CVT recall from them.

Their CVTs are pretty much bulletproof. There's a lot of luddites on here that perpetually call them 'bad ideas'. I discount their opinion as they apparently have zero experience owning one.

Why would anyone have to own a CVT to know it's a bad idea.

Kind of like I don't have to strike a match near some gasoline to know that is a bad idea...

Want me to make a list for you of manufacturers that have had CVT problems?
Nissan, Subaru, Honda and now Toyota.

You know how many people won't buy a car with a CVT because they don't like the way it feels? So for all those lost consumers it actually was a "bad idea."

Something tells me the owners of the Corolla Hatchbacks don't think it's "bulletproof", frankly, it sucks for them.

Not nearly as many as you seem to think.

There are recalls on tons of things on different makes and models. Yeah, it sucks for the owners of those vehicles for that one day their car is in the shop. Other than that, most of us go on with our lives without feeling like our lives are ruined over a simple recall.

LEt's see. I have 2 Lexus RX400hs with CVTs. One has over 200k miles. The other 300k. Never an issue. I have a Subaru Outback. 120k miles. Never an issue. I have lots of friends that have CVTS with no issues. Now, do they drive different than a 'normal' transmission? Sure? But outside of Nissan, there is no issue with CVTs. The Toyota units in the recall were manufacturing issues, not system issues with CVTs.

My guess would be 90% of people who aren't at all knowledgeable about cars make their purchasing decisions based on price, styling, features, and how well they anticipate the vehicle meeting their needs.

They have no interest in the transmission configuration whatsoever.

How the heck do you think Nissan is able to sell so many cars?
