I bought a new Toyota Sienna in 2000 and got the best deal by going through autobytel.com. The van has 210k on it now and refuses to die, much to my wife's dismay as she does not want to drive a minivan anymore I have a 98 Toyota Camry with 234k on it. They are great cars (not very exciting) and last forever...

This is a classic example of how Toyota is now producing crap, but is successful based on their reputation of building top-notch vehicles well-earned in previous years. If you take a look at the 07 to present Camry, the 09 Corolla, Matrix, and the current generation Tundra and Highlander you will see they are not anywhere near up to the stellar quality level of the 80-mid 2000 models.
I've been monitoring autotrader and carmax used car availability nationwide for the past month and have not seen any 2-3 yr old used model is going for half of new. Although, I was looking at highly desirable vehicles like the Acura, Toyota and Hondas. These brands seem to retain their resale value well.
Even looking at repo Toyotas and Hertz and Enterprise off-lease (~30k miles), I seldom see them for more than 25% off the original purchase price.
If you can find one for 50% off, I would have my mechanic checking it over witha fine toothed comb for problems.

Yes, because their 2 Toyotas are model years 2000 and 1998. Toyota was still building quality products then and had a well-earned reputation. They are building junk now, but are still selling well because of that well- earned reputation based on the cars built in earlier years, not based on the quality of the current year vehicles.

I think that 99% of drivers would be very satisfied with 200k miles.
Better than an engine failure at 120k in my last Oldsmobile.

You are missing my point. Older Toyota designs (pre 07) were top notch, new ones (07 to present) are crap. I hate to be that blunt, but that is my entire point.

Theyre NOT "crap", but theyre definitely NOT what they used to be either, I will agree there. Seems like most Japanese automakers are going downhill while domestics are roaring uphill. If this trend continues, within the next 5 years domestics will be king of the hill (reliability wise) and the Japanese cars will be sub-par again. Who knows?

The 09 Camry I had was pure CRAP. An embarassment for Toyota and a huge headache for me. I agree with you on the rest of your post.
