B/C unlike Acura/Infiniit/Honda/Nissan, Lexus/Toyota knew how important product overlap was, so the Cressida had to go since the ES 250/300 was coming.

As you can see later one they bring the FWD Avalon but it is huge and doesn't fight directly with the ES today.

Aah...my fav car of all time... Make mine an 83-84, two-tone. Brown and gold, brown and rosewood, something like that...bronze glass, moonroof. The 81-88 Maximas were wonderful as well. I always noticed over the years whenever I saw one (both were always quite rare here in SE MI...MI drivers preferred the 6000 STE, my fav American car) the Maximas were usually trashed and the Cressidas were occasionally still in great condition.

Takes me back to high school. Loved the 6000 STE. Back then imports weren't really that popular. My real love was the 1985 Saab Hatchback SPG.

I think back then it was still bigger is better thinking. The Maxima and Cressida weren't big enough in comparison to American cars.

Wikipedia does list it out pretty well:

1. Introduction of Lexus

2. Some of the technologies used in the Cressida going on to be implemented in Lexus

3. Introduction of a V6 engine in a Camry, and the Camry growing larger

4. Avalon

Nevertheless, I love any car, especially a 4-door sedan, with an I6 engine produced in the last 25 years. Certainly a dying breed.

The 89-92 body style lasted quite a bit longer outside North America. I'm quite certain it lasted to 2000 and probably even later. It wasn't called the Cressida in most of the world. It was called the Mark II or the Crown.

Back to the STE...speaking of lower-production GM FWDs with stripe kits and overly stiff suspensions, anyone remember the '88 Celebrity Eurosport VR? Very tacky and extremely rare even when new. My neighborhood Chevy lot had a silver sedan sitting in the used car section for six months or more; it probably only had a few thousand miles on it.

I drove a Cressida once, and while it was reasonably luxurious, I was shocked at how little room there was in the interior. Not a good packaging design for a car that is fairly large on the outside to have so little room on the inside!

Why did they stop?
- stupid, uninspiring name
- probably supplanted by the Avalon
- boring looking car
