Just looking at class race records currently and what it looks like in warrenty repairs. Doesn't mean I like 'em! I personally see no excuse to ever have a 4 cyl. powered vehicle!!! That's just a dumb waste of a vehicle in my opinion.
Neither do most people. A powerful four or six also has weight and packaging advantages that benefit acceleration, braking and handling performance.
Yes they do have packaging advantages, but those very same advantages also is in my opinion a disadvantage to the consumer. It frankly means the car company screwed them by building less vehicle for the money.

It is really amazing how many millions of car buyers want less, not more in their cars. They actually WANT more fuel economy, compact size, and a lower purchase price.
All I know is that my 8 yr old Toyota has 109000 miles on it and has been trouble free. On the other hand we've also had several Jeeps, a Dodge truck and a Nissan Altima since I've had my Toyota and they've ALL been maintenance nightmares. The Jeeps and the Dodge have continual air/heating issues, among other things, and the 2 yr old Nissan had to have a whole new transmission.
I will definitely buy another Toyota.

Yeah, there's no point in getting good fuel economy, while offering less moving parts, less engine weight for better handling and ease of configuration, etc, etc.
Some of the best cars in the world are 4 bangers, including many race cars. Want proof? Watch the WRC. Or the Formula Fords. Or the IDRC. Or visit a Lotus or Caterham showroom. Or....

Japanese cars are having more and more recalls, while American car recalls are happening less and less. What does that tell you?
And its not just the floor mats that are giving Toyota headaches, its aslo due to sticking throttles that are caused by faulty drive-by-wire failures. Gee, thats fun!
And check out the latest Honda Accord recall. A metal airbag detonator can over-pressurize and explode, sending metal shrapnel THROUGH the airbag upon detonation, killing its occupants. There has already been a few deaths from that one, too.
And what about the Mitsu safety problems that were uncovered many years ago? Did everyone forget that escapade? And companies like Suzuki and Isuzu made JUNK cars. Did you forget about those?
Bottom line? ALL makes have their issues, so quit pretending its only American car companies. Theyre doing a great job cleaning up past errors, while the Japanese are screwing up more and more, and their recalls are due to deaths occurring from failures. Id rather take my Focus in for a faulty fuel pump recall than for a defective airbag that is basically a grenade blowing up in my face (as in Honda's case).
