We drove my g/f's 97 Corolla to Michigan for Thanksgiving and somewhere around WV when it started to get cold I found that the heater doesn’t work. I went to look for the t-stat in the usual place (upper radiator hose) but did not find it there. Could it be on the lower? It too is connected to the top of the engine. Or is it somehow connected to the water pump? Please help!

Thanks,

MISC

Its always the top hose that goes to the thermostat . Move everything back out of the way so you can reach it and BE careful not to break the bolts off removing the housing .

Not always. It goes to the lower hose on a Camry 4cyl(most years), in the water pump housing. Pump and housing bolt together to the block. T-stat is behind the black housing.

I think the watercooled VW's of the late '70s were among the first to have this type of t-stat setup, it allows the water pump to circulate water in the engine and basically just bleeds enough off through the radiator to reject enough heat to maintain setpoint temperature. I am thinking Toyota Corollas in '97 have the zz engine, changing this thermostat is a little more complicated than most old Detroit V-8 or I-6 motors.

it is located just the upper end of the hose which connected to the lower hole of the radiator (means inlet to the engine)

Locate the lower radiator hose and follow it to the engine. At the end of the hose is the thermostat housing.

Wow so much conflicting advice. You're better off either consulting a Chilton's/Haynes manual or a Corolla forum.

The thermostate is in the water neck just below and to the right of the distributor. I ought to know as I've taken it off recently to change my wife's thermostat. Remove the top of the air cleaner housing and the filter to have easier access at the two nut that have to be removed to get the water neck off. Use a 10 mm wrench or socket.

Not always. B18 Honda motors have them on the lower.
