The whole idea of backpacking is to escape from the world where you're not backpacking.

There are internet cafes everywhere, about a penny a minute.
My extended family isn't that extremely close but I do think they would have had a fit if they hadn't heard from us in a year and known if we were still alive or not. And now that I have kids ready to head out backpacking themselves, I will embarrass them and make an international incident if I don't at least hear from them every once in a while to tell me that they're safe. They can save the gory details for later when they get home.

You are correct in the last sentence though. I have been in ones that charged like $5/hour and then I'd go next door and they were charging $.25/hour, so shop around if it seems exorbitant. We did not take a cellphone and when we tried to call home from NZ, we had to buy not one, but 2 phone cards to use in the payphones there. I'd take the cellphone next time. Internet cafes in a lot of places also have calling centers, which is another option.

I agree about the SPOT communicator. It is linked by satellite, so there is good service in most places (even in the back country). It can automatically send progress reports showing your location, if you so desire. I know it works for outgoing messages, but I'm not sure about receiving incoming messages. It can also function as an emergency locator, by alerting the local authorities to respond to your location if the emergency button is pressed.
