Anyone try this before?

You stay with a family, get 3 meals a day, and spanish lessons at a school during the day.

In Guatemala, it all costs about $150 - 300 a week depending on which program you do. Seems like a good deal.

Though I prefer South America over Central.

I think it is a great option.
I had a home stay when I went to Ecuador to teach English at a university there. Since I didn't know any Spanish, living with a local family helped me learn Spanish as well as the local customs.

It's wonderful. You can always change families, if you don't like your placement. I did it in Antigua, Guatemala. I met very few people there who were not delighted with their family.

I doubt if it would be any different in any South American country.

I'm looking into it through the National Registration Center for Study Abroad (NRCSA). One of my friends went to Buenos Aires last month and had a wonderful experience.

Prices for 2010

Basic: A room with a shared bathroom, complete with three meals a day, costs 215 soles per week, or 396 per week for a couple. This includes a 45 soles per person contribution to FairPlay.

Medium: A room with a private bathroom, complete with three meals a day, costs 245 soles per week, or 450 per week for a couple. This includes a 45 soles per person contribution to FairPlay.
To figure out prices, divide the soles amount by 2.83 for US Americans.

The first and second link have tons of general info but the third one is geared specifically to what you're looking for. (I just want you to know that I had to get up out of my chair and go find that card!) Anyway, it's for Cusco, Peru and that would be a great place to go learn Spanish--it has everything, though if you get too close to the Plaza de Armes, they will hound you to death to buy souvenirs. But you're very close to Machu Picchu there and many other ruins as well. GO.
