Go During "Shoulder Season" in Late Sept - Early November. You can probably get RT air from SFO & 5 night hotel for around $1000-$1200 per person. Plan on buying a week long tube pass. Eat Cheap & take advantage of all the free museums (and that includes most of the big ones) and you can do it for under $3k easy.
